Gen II was a POS. I had one with the GTI engine. It was less than a sports car...

My uncle had one of these generation I late 70s, Scirocco's like the green one pictured. It had plenty of problems, which was surprising given that all the Rabbits we had were pretty rocksolid cars. It handled a bit better than the Rabbit, but there really wasn't much difference. They made good farm cars because of the frontwheel drive, they would get you out of things that no rear wheel drive car could. Definitely a driver's car as well, with great handling for its time, if it didn't have the necessary grunt to qualify as a genuine sports car.

I've seen some of those generation II turbocharged and hopped up with about 280 hp, and they made pretty good dirt and gravel road blasters. We had a 76 rabbit that had a hot rebuilt 1.5-liter engine with a high-volume carburetor and all the emission garbage like the catalytic converter removed so it could run on regular (leaded) gas, and it made about 115 hp, and strip it down till it weighed about 1750 pounds. It was a screamer that would almost break 130 mph, but unlike a beetle it was kind of floaty at high speed with the stock suspension. I embarrassed a few small block Chevys on the back country roads of Missouri with that thing, when my dad wasn't looking.
