Behold! Following last night’s pre-reveal and as we first told you a couple of weeks ago, Volkswagen has uncovered its sixth-generation Golf GTi that gets an updated 210HP 2.0-liter turbocharged ahead of its world debut at the Paris Motor Show. At a first glance, it seems that not many things have changed in terms of styling with the outgoing GTI. And truly enough, VW dressed the body of the Golf VI that looks very similar in appearance to the previous model, with the same visual effects used in the GTI V. These include a red surrounding for the smaller in dimensions, honeycomb grille, black side skirts and oddly enough, the same set of 18-inch five-hole alloy wheels. No wonder VW believes it’ll make more money from the Golf VI… -Continued
When put aside to the standard Golf VI models, the 2009 GTI manages to stand out thanks to the new headlight clusters, a distinct front bumper with repositioned fog lights, a larger roof spoiler and a new rear bumper that integrates dual exhaust pipes that have been moved to the far corners of the car.
Inside, owners of the previous Golf GTI will feel right at home as with the exception of a few parts that were pinched from the Passat CC, the overall styling of the fifth-generation model has been retained on the new GTI. The most unique features on the car are the black-and-white checkered tweed bucket seats and the sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Under the bonnet, the new GTI gets a slightly more powerful latest generation turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI engine that delivers an output of 210HP, up from 200HP and a maximum torque figure of 280 Nm or 207-lbs/ft at 1.800 rpm (same as the previous GTI).
Hooked up to a six-speed manual gearbox or optionally, a dual clutch DSG semi-auto gearbox, the 2009 Golf GTI accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h (62mph) in 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 239 km/h or 148 mph. For the record, the outgoing 200HP GTI features the same 0-100 km/h sprint time and a maximum speed of 235 km/h or 146 mph.
In terms of fuel consumption, the new GTI returns an average of 31.4 mpg or 7.5 lt/100km which is slightly better than the GTI V’s 29.4 mpg or 8.0 lt/100 km. Sales of the Golf GTI VI are expected to begin in

Totally boring
I really don't understand what is the problem with vw. First of all, i had to look at the car like five times to see that it was the new Gti. Second, 210 hp???? That's so gay. Even the Astra 1.6 turbo (not the VRX) will probably give it a hard time
Another money grab by VW..Hmm lets add 5 bhp more and have the SAME 0-100km/h time and call it the MK VI!! Look at that boring interior. The steering looks worse than the MKV, those fabric side door panels look like they will tear at the slightest thug and the dual zone air con controls look REALLY cheap and ancient, like some 1970s radio knobs. Can anyone say regression VW?
Did you ever drive a VW ??
Have you ever driven anything other than the GTI?
The last anom no. 4: Its not about the drive or handling of the VW GTI which since Mk V has been lauded by the press. It's the whole design philosophy of VW for this Mk VI - the interior looks worse than the Mk V, reusing the same looks, even the same rims, having no or negligible performance gains and calling it the Mk VI! Someone sack the VW designer lest he kill us all from boredom.
The design objective of the Mk VI was to reduce manufacturing cost by some 20%, not to go for some bold performance/technology/design benchmark.
The Mark VI GTI looks incrementally better than the Mark V, mostly because of the grille. VW has thankfully done away with the ugly fake uniframe (giant mouth) motif. Inside, it's a tossup.
the first GTI from the 70s was a poor mans racer, but the new GTIs are like a punks racer, with those "classicish" ugly seats and retroish design elements.
It's like making a huge V8 with a tiny electric engine added and calling that "eco friendly HYBRID!"
In this case they make a yet another piece of every day VW, paint a couple of red lines, put some ugly seats and try to sell it as a stylish car modern VW cannot be.
I have a very bad attitude towards this car and anyone who drives it.
Boys and girls, if you don't like the car, don't buy it and don't drive it. Simple as that.
The designers aren't going to wilt with fear just because seven people on an autoblog don't like it.
More importantly, there will be millions of people who do like it, so deal with it.
It's just a car, not a member of the royal family. It has a long and faithful history with real drivers, so your opinions sort of fade into the background with that in mind. Hush.
To lache; It's not about not liking it. It's about why VW didn't make it more powerful -they sure can, look at the S3 or even the Leon Cupra- and why didn;t they make it look more exclusive.
Well guys, it all depends on personal taste. I preffer look of MKV hundred times more than this new one. I love that front grille (giant mouth) on MKV. That single thing made me buy it, and loved it since.
This new one, I'm not so sure about.
Regarding power, I'm fine even if they stick with MKV engine. Drive it and you'll see you'll dont need anything stronger than that. (you are not race driver are you?)
Lache:
Sure many people will like it cos it's a "GTI" and cos of its tradition. It's sad to see VW taking this path with the Mk VI - a cost cutting move with exactly the same performance figures for a new generation while other hot hatches have and will have evolved to fit, match and better that "Grand Tourer" ride comfort, performance and drive that the Mk V was.
By the way, why don't you get off that condescending whatever-is-said-here-don't-count-for-nothing attiude. If no one comments about new cars, how would manufacturers improve for future iterations? if you cannot engage in mature debate about car models, why not head over to your nearest VW dealer / VW website / the Paris Motorshow and ogle or fawn over the new GTIs without spouting a word of criticism of this GTI 'cos "millions of people do like it".
JD: It's about why VW didn't make it more powerful -they sure can, look at the S3 or even the Leon Cupra- and why didn;t they make it look more exclusive"
I dont think the GTI is trying to compete with the S3 - in oz the GTI is about 20 grand less then an s3.... thats the job of the r32, and from all reports the r32 is going to be faster and awd.....
sure cars like the mazda 3 turbo and astra are probably quicker - but for mine GTI looks a hundred times better and handles better as well
i like it but at the same time the fact that it hasnt moved very far visually or performance wise from the mark 5 means ill stick to my new mark 5 for a while and might just skip this generation... The design features of the mark 6 are a little boxy or dare i say japanese/korean car looking... as an overall package thought it looks nice.
In reply to the second post, JD.
I very much doubt a 1.6l astra would give a 2.0l any trouble at all.
Here is why I think this: I own and drive a 2.0l TDi Astra. I had a moving drag race with a TDi Golf (mark IV) and with my foot down it left me.
Now, being as a Golf beat an Astra with similar sized engines; I think the 2.0l Golf would rip even the 1.6 Astra a new one.
Jeremy"It's still a Golf, but somehow it's not". Thats is exactly what they did in this generation and I like it. Thumbs up for GTI.
Those talking smack about this GTI and Volkswagens in general, have obviously never driven one or owned one. They remain today what they were when they first came out, one of the best handling, most forgiving and predictable, easiest to live with cars on the road. With more power and all-wheel-drive the GTI could easily be in the same league with the Impreza WRX STI and Lancer Evo. I'd love to have one with the dual clutch gearbox
And I love those Hot Wheels Rims
Thank you Aaron X, finally a positive comment. Whatever the Golf VI's faults, there are plenty of much worse cars out there.
Personally, i think the Mark VI looks a whole lot better than the V, which isn't to say that the V was ugly. The VI is just gorgeous on the outside and I've only seen photos. The interior is obviously better too. The engines are more economical. Emissions are lower and Power and top speed are up slightly. Overall, you can't disagree that the whole package is better.
It isn't just a case of why by a Scirocco or TT, the Golf GTI gives a whole bunch of cars that cost 2x as much a good run for their money. In short, I think this car is a perfect compromise of the many things you need from any everyday car.
Since owning a Golf Mk III VR-6, I've owned Audis, BMWs, Mercs and a Lexus. The Mark VI has just tempted me to return to VW. I'll know for sure after the Paris show next week.
@aaron x
"Those talking smack about this GTI and Volkswagens in general, have obviously never driven one or owned one."
>>Yup, I'm sure you have driven this Mk VI model and given it the beans then. If you haven't and still have blind faith in this VW GTI being good, great, go out and pre-order it. Those who commented probably know that the Mk V was and is highly regarded. I have driven one, it is a fine car. But with more and better hot hatches coming up, people here are questioning, purely from the descriptions given by VW, whether it can measure up and whether that handling nous, forgiving, easy to live with character can be had or bettered in competing hatches like the Megane RS26, Focus ST or Civic Type R.
"With more power and all-wheel-drive the GTI could easily be in the same league with the Impreza WRX STI and Lancer Evo. I'd love to have one with the dual clutch gearbox"
>> No one had any problems with the GTI-R here. 265bhp 4WD sounds great. Easily in the league of Evos and STis? Please look at the Golf R32 for reference - it can't even beat a FWD Mazda 3 MPS (or Mazdaspeed 3) (http://www.fastestlaps.com/index.php?page_id=compare&car1=458d141445bc7&car2=45c81efb18f1d), VW has its work cut out for it if they want to take on the likes of the Evo and STi in the Mk VI GTI-R. The GTI-R is worth waiting for, but hey, don't take my word for it, use your rather lucid and extensive knowledge of VW cars and conclude, please.
gti 2liter is even worse than c4vts...tested...and that's an aspirated engine,no turbo and only 180hp.
all vw are lame cars fore lame ppl still beliving in the german car myth
This new car looks like an old Fiat. It's sucks.

I GUESS U ARE BMW FAN OR SOME LAME HONDA!!!
VW IS FOR ALL PEOPLE CAR!! GTI IS JUST ANOTHER SPORT CAR FOR PEOPLE WITH LIMITED CASH, AND EVEN NOW THAT CAR IS HIGH.... IN ANY WAYS...DESIGN IS PERSONAL OPINION, HANDLING IS GREAT, SITTING AND POSITION IN IT IS PERFECT (OPINION FROM GTI-V) THERE ISN'T JAPANESE CAR THAT GOOD!! I KNOW, BECAUSE IM TEST DRIVER IN OUR SERVICE AND SELLERS!
IN OTHER HAND FOR PURE SPORT HERE'S R32 OR NEW SCIROCCO! SO SHUT THE HELL UP!
hahaha
gti better than all Japanese cars?
yeah sure bud! i am not gonna say more, it's not worth it, i'm just gonna laugh ha ha ha ha
2004 VR6 owner will never sit in another car till i am alive
Just curious, what japanese car in this class can even compare in terms of overall quality and performance? And no the the civic si is not one of them with 128 ft/lbs of torque!
nothing can compare! the new GOLF GTI is truly awesome.
Dear All car lovers, is GTI good? is it bad? is it better than Japanese cars or is it worse?
one thing for sure, GTI has personality and that can't be bad.
About performance no matter what car u drives there will always be a faster one & what a thrill u get when u over come a more powerful car!
i own a Honda CRX & i love it, i own a GTI V & i love it, i own a Triumph Sptifire & i also love it.
Japanese cars are better than German as everyday car but German's have style & the interior has a much superior quality.
Whatever car u buy make sure it has personality (even if ur girl doesn't like it) take care of it, cherish it & enjoy taking it for a drive
i really don't understand the policy and philosophy of vw with the new gti. I was waiting for something more extreme, something more powerful and i realize that the new gti is almost the same with the previous one... i am an owner of gti v and to be honest i prefer it than the new one.VW has to be competitive in the market and i believe that is responsible to do something about that as soon as possible...
I picked the Mazdaspeed3 over the mk5 GTI last year. The GTI IS probably the best well-rounded in this segment, and it's Audi-like interior is fantastic. There are times I regret buying the Mazdaspeed3 over the GTI, but not very often. I'm afraid this new GTI will get its ass handed to it even worse when Mazda introduces the new Mazdaspeed3 at the same time this year. VW absolutely needs 250hp/tq in this car and its a disgrace they didn't.
Putting 250+ hp in a fwd car seems moronic to me. At some point you will start sacrificing the handling of the car, and I don't think vw wants to do that. I have driven the mk v gti and torque steer seems to be under control there, but with more power it may become a problem, like in mazdaspeed 3.
This car will never be a racer, but it can be a lot of fun. Why is everyone obsessed with hp?
why then GTI edition 30 was fitted with 230hp engine? Couldn't it be even that much?
I don't believe anybody have had tractrion on it's mind deciding to make MKVI GTI be 210hp. That nothing but joke. I own GTI mkV and 200hp is not bad, but if I want to change it to new model then what? 210hp? Buy new car just not to feel any difference? No, thanks.
this post was dated sept.25,2008. today is feb. 15, 2009. im just surfin the net for GTI news. those freaks saying the GTI cant outrun the STI or Evo or some hatch today are better, well dont buy it, the GTI has a larger cult than your mazda3sss spanning for decades. the GTI has identity of its own, the car for the general public.
only people who don't know about cars compare GTI with STI or Evo.and also don't compare with ALL japanese hothatchs.GTI is not just a fast hatchback.it's got a character.and do not blame the new GTI with it's 0-100 sprint or maximum hp.advantage of a turbo-charged engine can be seen only on the road, not on the papers.MKVI didn't come to my country (turkey)yet, but soon it will.if you have chance to test MKVI,please drive this at full throttle first.but like a real driver.you'll agree with me.
secondly,i partially agree with some comments.the steering wheel could be better.the steering wheel of MKV belong to scirocco now.the interior can be personalised when you buy it don't worry.the exhausts look nice.MKVI's design is inspired from the GTI W12 concept i think.
finally,do not blame this car just by reading the papers.and even if 160hp scirocco goes up to 230km/h on a slightly downhill road, thinking the 210hp GTI will be locked at 235km/h is ridicilous.
You are all total morons, go get a life.
Honestly some of your comments are absolutely ludicrous, what do you do sit at home and choose what car to pull to bits next? If you haven't driven the new mark VI yet give it up cos you have no idea what you are talking about and in all honesty nobody wants to read rubbish like most of you are spouting.
Kurt
Der geilste GTI Allerzeiten!
liebt ihn oder hasst ihn!
Weiter so VW
dam, this car is the same as the golg 5 gti. why he putting this ugky wheels ogen? why it has only 210 hp? where is diff. This car must be named golf 5.1
I had the Golf IV GTI and traded it for the GTI V DSG about a year ago, and wow what a car, everyday I love it more. Not one day have i had a problem. People around me bought the Opel's and Ford ST's. Their cars are more at the deallers then what they drive it, steering, Turbo and gearboxes problems. I will never look back and looking forwar to trading it in for the Golf VI
The 5 is awesome, well lets wait for GTI 7, hopefully it will be an improved generation. GTI 6 just don't deserve any debate! Will simply have to skip this 6th generation..
Personally, as owner of the mk5 Edn 30, I prefer the looks of the mk5. I hate those crass alloys, why not give it the multi-spoke from the GTD or the Lugano from the Scirocco?
Sad to see they've gone for the same cheap-nasty steering wheel that's in the current Audis eg. S3. The one from the mk5 and Scirocco looks and feels much better quality.
As for power. The 230bhp in the Edn30 is too much for the car in FWD format; in anything but the driest conditions it dances all over the place. The Scirocco carries it's 200bhp well, so 210 should be fine.
If you want more power, go for the S3; it's staggeringly fast, but the interior is as cheap and nasty as a 70s Datsun.
Overall, I'm disappointed by what VW have done with the mk6. For me, it'll probably be the Scirocco, it's built on the components of the mk5 and hasn't been made 20% cheaper to manufacture.
The best car on the market. End of story!!!
I will still settle for the 370Z .... It will kick any golf ....
The first comment ? Golf R32 will fuck any car you want, it's faster than a porsche man :S
THE NEW MK VI GOLF IS THE BEST SO FAR BEATING ALL THE GOLFS MADE BY VW I TAKE MY HATS OFF TO THE MK VI GOLF
Super lame! Just get a WRX and call it a day. This car is as cool as a civic...
The only saving grace for VS is that they bumped up MPG to help them meet upcoming standards
I have ordered a Golf VI in Tornado Red, sunroof, 18" Monza's and 510RCD with dynaudio, this is may first GTI and to be honest you can read all day the bad and good comments about the mark VI, what I dont understand is why people say it needs more HP. My second car was a 205 1.9 GTI with 130hp and one of the best hot hatches of its day. Super cars have now been split into 2 groups super cars and now a new class hyper cars, surely this should be the case for hatches anything 250hp plus should be called a hyper hatch. If I didnt like a car I wouldnt come on here telling people how much I didnt like it just dont buy it if everyone loved it the world would be like the town where VW's are made with everyone driving them. Yes its not ground breaking from the Mark V but why should it be its a formula that worked and at least its better the mark 3 & 4.
GTI is best auto GTI fan
LOL orderd mine with out driving it just sat in it n fell in love .....other cars i actaully drove and tested: 2010 sti n genesis coupe ....sure ther faster. but they just feel cheap in comparison.(guess $$ goes 4 the drivetarin and drivetarin only)meh 2 me its all bout the balance of everything the car has and it seems 2 have that balance i seek ;) ...my first VW been drivn japs 4 2 long...............CANT W8 hahahhahhahahha
I had a 425hp Skyline R33, and MY99, MY03, MY09 WRX's. I test drove this and bought one. Waiting for it. I was a jap car lover (still am). But until you sit in and drive one, its hard to explain how connected you feel to the road and how well its put together. it feels like a little tank. It also sounds soooo good. Sure its not that fast. Not fast at all actually, but its got plenty of mid range, it can spin the wheels and power out of a corner, so when you sit in for a blast its honestly all you ever need cause you feel every Kilowatt.
Like I said before, I love my 0-100km/h and 1/4mile times, for sure! but just drive one and dont let anyone else's opinion make up your mind for you.
i love this car vw has never disappointed. thats why they called "The Peoples Cars"......i'm a big fan of Golf GTi... MK6 is in perfect balance in terms of speed, power, torque, fuel consumption and handling...thats why i consider VW as family... they rock
I am 24 and i had a BMW X5, 3 bmw 5 series, porsche cayenne, and many other cars.....i have a bmw 630 i convertible now and i just ordered a VW GOLF GTI DSG. WHY? beceause it's a very fun to drive everyday car, it has lot of power, enough room for everybody, easy to park and it is a good looking hot hatch.the interior is sporty the seats and steering are great, and the DSG dual clutch transmission is very helpful when u want to keep both hands on the wheel when u are in a curve and u want to change gear(i drove the ferrari F430,the gallardo 560p and the 911 carrera S and all of them had paddle shifters behind the wheel), olso great confort when u drive it in big traffic.the adaptive suspension is olso great because it lets u modify the stiffness of the car, making ur ride smoother or sportier. jeremy clarckson had a review over the GTI MK5 and he was very surprised how good that car is....well.....the MK6 is better!
" BMW X5, 3 bmw 5 series, porsche cayenne, and many other cars"
Owning these DOESN'T make you an arbiter of cars in sense nor give any air of credibility or persuasive weight to your opinions.
All of the negative criticism over the markVI GTi here is a result of the wrong audience on this forum (and also the bias of markV owners, who do not want to swallow the fact that a slightly superior model is out).
The Golf VI GTi is meant for customers who are looking first at comfort and practicality (hence a golf) and then after rethinking their budget they find value in coughing up a bit more to get a good dose of excitement from their vehicle.
I am looking for a new car now and if it weren't for my newborn baby girl, I would have gone for the faster hatchbacks everyone is benchmarking the golf against. But since this is not the case, my priorities are now rearranged and I couldn't be happier that out on the market there is the Golf VI GTi.
Just the 3 month delivery time is killing me...
