BMW 5-Series GT Spotted by Reader in New Jersey

|
Carscoop reader Kenneth Helman caught these photos of the forthcoming BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo in a parking lot somewhere in New Jersey. Even though the Bavarian firm has already released a slew of official shots as well as initial specifications, for some reason the automaker chose to mask the BMW logo - as if anyone could confuse the 5-meter (196-in.) long crossover for something else...

BMW's newest addition to the 5-Series range will debut at this fall's Frankfurt motor show and go on sale in most parts of the world by the end of year.

Depending on the market, the liftback crossover will be offered with a choice of three power plants, a 3.0-liter twin turbocharged inline six petrol with 306HP for the 535i GT, a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol delivering 407HP in the 550i GT and a 3.0-liter straight-six diesel with 245HP in the 530d GT.

We thank Kenneth again for the shots, and remember that if you find any scoops of your own, don't hesitate to send them our way.

The ugliest BMW ever !

Just imagine - the sedan can't look any worse than this, that's for damn sure! They're just lowering expectations...

This car is just like the Panamera. Is it super ugly or kind of cool? Can't answer yet...

that means that the face of the 5 is going to be this ugly too?

bah the butt looks just super PHAT!!! but you have to see it before you judge it, many cars dont look the same in photos and real life...

Rememebr that monkey from Outbreak? Yeah, I'd sooner get infected with some kind of virus by having a monkey urinate directly into my mouth and endure the subsequent suffering and potential death-risk than be seen driving this thing.

After seeing this, nex tot the Hummer, I can get a good idea of the profile, and I must say I am liking it even more. People talked trash about the first X5 and why BMW shouldn't build it. But it is 9 years strong and still beautiful.

Thing is, BMW knows how to design cars that endure stylewise, for many, many years. I am not saying it is not ugly, but it will transform to beautiful, holistically, in a few years. It's not just about what it looks like, it's about the drive, the feel, the smells...BMW is it.

Yes, there have been some not so pretty BMWs (7 series, late 80s, early 90s; maybe same for the 02 to 08) but then there are these:
Every single M3 to date
E31
E34
E38
E39 M
E60 M
F01
And many more. Well, time will tell.

"but it will transform to beautiful, holistically"

Excuse me, but we are talking about an awful-looking car, not artwork.

That car, LIKE EVERY OTHER CAR ON EARTH, is simply a collection of parts arranged to serve a fuction. Nothing more.

If you want to get metaphyical about it, I suggest you first drink some more kool-ade and then hang out with some loser new-age religion hippies. I'm sure they'll buy this junk too if you spin it like you did; not that you're trying to pitch a thinly-veiled ad at us or anything.

Anon #6: Isn't art just a collection of parts arranged to serve the function of invoking an emotion?
I can see how you might think I work for BMW or something, all I can say is, I wish.
I never used to like BMWs, but now I do and I 'get' the idea behind every BMW product.

What makes the basic design of the iPod so attractive that everyone wnats one? Timelessness. That is what BMW style is all about. Again, yes there have been some awful screw ups, but there are also some pretty incredible ones as well. The E31 * series for example, that design will never die, yet during its time it never sold in the volune BMW expected. People did not get it then, but they sure do now. Just look up how much a 95 850CSi is going for and find another 95 MY car that can approach those prices.

The beauty of this car will come out over time, not just designwise, but functionality as well.

So you've decided to equate a BMW with an ipod?

Trivial. An ipod is a white-good; disposable. Reasons like that are why I do not have nor want an ipod. Refering to it as 'timeless' doesn't change what it is nor does it vault it to a special hollowed level of social status; undeserved.

In the case of the 5gt, born from a marketing meeting, the proposal was put forth to engineering who then had to rush it off ot BMW's stylists who they had to pitch it to marketing who then had to fabricate some insignifigant splinter-sized demographic with which to make this car fit.

I can't expect you to grasp this. Using metaphysical nonsense terms like "timelessness" to describe an ipod irrespective of what time actually is will only leave you further from reality.

To all the people who dislike this car/other BMWs:

No one said you had to buy one, now carry on
