New Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport: 1,200HP and 415km/h - 258MPH [with 31 High-Res Photos]

|

If you're a fan of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, then you're going to love the new, limited edition Super Sport model that was officially revealed on Sunday. The crème de la crème of the Veyron family is faster, lighter and of course, more powerful than the... banal series production model.

How much more powerful and faster, we hear you ask? Well, the carbon-fiber skinned Veyron 16.4 Super Sport gets a massaged 16-cylinder turbocharged unit pumping out 1,200HP, or 199HP more than the standard model (or at least that's the official number from the automaker).

Over the weekend, Bugatti's engineers took the black and orange Super Sport to the VW Group's proving grounds of at Ehra-Lessien nearby their headquarters at Wolfsburg.

"In the presence of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 431.07 km/h [268 mph]," said the company in a statement.

"We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h," explains Bugatti's chief engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, "but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more."

In particular, Bugatti's Pilote Officiel Pierre Henri Raphanel recorded a top speed of 427, 933 km/h [266.1 mph] from South to North and 434, 211 km/h [270.03 mph] in the opposite direction. For safety reasons and more specifically to protect the tires, the production model's top speed will be limited to 415 km/h [258.1 mph]. For the record, the standard Veyron achieves a top speed of 407km/h [253.1 mph].

So let's see the new Veyron 16.4 Super Sport in detail. Bugatti's engineers started by upgrading the Veyron's 8.0-liter 16-cylinder engine with four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercooler -among other changes- boosting output from 1,001HP to a 1,200HP and peak torque from an already massive 1,250Nm to a mind-boggling 1,500Nm or 1,106 lb-ft.

The company did not release acceleration figures, but expect the Super Sport to be slightly faster than the standard model in the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint [Veyron 16.4: 2.2 seconds].

The suspension has been modified with a slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers, and brand new shock absorbers. Bugatti claims that the Super Sport can pull 1.4 G of lateral acceleration [standard Veyron: 1.25 G].

The Super Sport also features a new fibre structure of the all-carbon monocoque that reduces weight while the skin is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites. Upon request, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is available in 100 per-cent clear-lacquered exposed carbon.

Along with the new paint two-tone, black and orange paint job, the Super Sport features a series of exterior modifications that help distinguish it from the standard Veyron. These include the two NACA ducts integrated into the roof, instead of the scoops above the engine, the expanded and reshaped front air intakes and redesigned engine compartment and rear bumper with a double diffuser and a new centrally arranged exhaust system.

The Super Sport's interior has also been revised featuring unique trim materials and colors along with special logos.

According to Bugatti, the first five Super Sports to come off the production line will constitute a special series of their own, with the same configuration as the landspeed record car.

More details on the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport will released when the limited production supercar makes its public debut in California at the Pebble Beach Concours weekend in mid-August.

still ugly... And useless in the real world... You're never gonna reach 407 or 415km/h on a road... Well not a track car either since race cars with quite less power can be faster on track... And as i've said before, I'm sure many people like this car because of the 1001HP or in this case 1200HP. If it had like 600HP i don't think that someone would call it "Beautiful"

Although the color isn't my taste , but at least it's better looking than American car .

...ugly, useless, slow?......you just don't get it.

Anonymous said... »July 04, 2010

thank You Bugatti people that it looks just right.

Anonymous said... »July 04, 2010

UGLY, just ugly.

I got the e-mail from Bugatti too about this... but in it they quote the top speed at 268mph (431 kmh). You might wanna check again. (NF)

Well it would be fun to drive and show off, but thats it... 1 million plus, well u'd have to be mad... that money I would rather a Zonda.. at least it looks the part...

MatthewNZ said... »July 05, 2010

If you had the money to buy it you wouldn't be on here bitching about how its too fast.

I guess Bugatti should have made it slower....?

Yeah maybe not.

Nice car, but ugly choice in color combination.

The colour ist just wrong...sorry but that looks like plain aftermarket tuning, it simply does not befit such a company. Other than that this upgrade was expected for some time. Doesnt the original Veyron already have a highter output than stated?

For those, who consider this a useless car...that claim seems to miss the mark...no supercar has any use except to provide driving pleasure. By that definition any car that goes faster than 155 mph is "useless". Actually on most roads outside of Germany the limit could be even lower.

For me the Veyron falls into a similar categorie like the Gumpert Apollo...its not so much about looks, but performance. And not just for one time-trial, such as other garage-produced 1000 bhp record-claims. This car can do it again, and again...and again.

It's an incredible achievement ! The car still has a luxury feel interior despite being 300kgs lighter. The color combo is also fantastic...

Anonymous said... »July 05, 2010

Well... it was designed to be flamboyant... and it still is... I prefer a Zonda over this car...

"It's an incredible achievement ! The car still has a luxury feel interior despite being 300kgs lighter."

Maybe 30 kilos lighter..

Another toy for ultra-rich middle east oil sheiks and their spoiled offspring. How long before we see one of these vehicles up in flames along some desert highway? I'd rather save my money and launch a used Impala over the toll booths at DFW!!

it does nothing for me colour-wise, yet i am able to sit back and admire its beauty. with a car costing as much, it should standout. magnificent!

"The car still has a luxury feel interior"

Are you kidding? For what you pay, that's one of the worst interiors I've ever seen. It's uninspired and you can't even get a satnav on it.

Anonymous said... »July 05, 2010

the car has always been ugly to me. bet u a new gtr tuned by japanese tuners would prob beat that land speed record.

Anonymous said... »July 06, 2010

I think the car is unique and beautiful, but this particular color combination is bad, definitely at the top of my list for least favorite of all of the Veyron's color combinations. Bright orange is just too hard to work right, and doesn't feel right on such an elegant yet beastly car.

"bet u a new gtr tuned by japanese tuners would prob beat that land speed record."

xenophobe.

"xenophobe"

but Americans are not Japanese.

Talk about complete ignorance. All Veyron has satnav display integrated in rear-mirror and also a PDA that tracks the car status. Somebody thinks interior needs to have many buttons displaying their poor taste.

this car is going to be the fastest in the world you don't need to be concerned about the colours it will be long gone before any one has a chance to notice them but i bet it is realy loud with an engine like that

Anonymous said... »July 08, 2010

"but Americans are not Japanese."

Who said anything about the yanks? Imply that only the japanese can and no one else can IS xenophobic.

lol@ all these clueless idiots who've never even seen a Bugatti Veyron in real life trying to judge it calling it ugly, etc. The Bugatti is simply Badass in the highest sense of the word! It is a masterpiece and the ONLY reason some moron (s) would say it's too fast, ugly, not worth it, etc, etc, are those you can't and will never be able to afford such an awesome masterpiece of an automobile.

Anonymous said... »July 11, 2010

Its front looks like loo. I think it about front grill.
It's not great car, it is heavy weight parody of supercar.

Muflih said... »July 11, 2010

lol @ the guy who wants to support the Bugatti calling people clueless idiots just because their opinion is different than his ;)
Where I live I see supercars everyday. I've seen a Veyron once and i just passed by... Furthermore, kid, only a few millionaires own and will own a Veyron and there also other cars on the market which are more expensive than the Veyron. It's got nothing to do about the money it costs, since i bet u will also never be able to afford a Veyron, actually not even a Porsche Boxter! So stop trying to defend a car you don't own and will never own with ridiculous and insulting arguments!

So you think a car that costs as much as it does is ABOVE criticism?

Lets put one thing straight; NOTHING is above criticism. Not a car, not a brand, not method, not a religion, not you, not even your mother is above criticism.

Anonymous said... »July 27, 2010

Outstanding machine. A beast. Too bad there are so many haters here. I guess they're all bored with their renault clios 1.2, so they offered their non-constructive criticism regarding the car. Get a job, LOL.

Get a life kid, LOL.

What is 100 per-cent clear-lacquered exposed carbon and is this an option for the skin frame or both.

Even though the shear power of this car is insane. Its still a more practical driving car than the Zonda is, this a least looks like it could be an everyday sports car. The Zonda looks like it should be driven on the track, and it should stay there. 1200 horse power out of the factory is something people only could have imagined till now. This car not only changes the whole out look on sports car, but it also makes everyone else work a lot harder.

Ps. The color combination is spectacular, there not saying buy it in this color. They wanted it to stand out and it sure does. Well done Bugatti!
