Volkswagen Files Design Patents for Jetta Coupe

|

Found on the trademark office, are these patent drawings of the Volkswagen Jetta Coupe, or as the German automaker named the concept version of the car at the Detroit Auto Show in January, the NCC (New Compact Coupe).

Those skimming the photos may notice a couple of changes over the concept model that was motivated by a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. These include the more production like grille and addition of fog lamps up front, and the visible exhaust tail pipes at the back.

The fact that Volkswagen filed these drawings doesn't guarantee that the company will go ahead and produce what we like to call, the poor-man's Audi A5. However, since Volkswagen has no plans to bring the Scirocco to the States and given that the NCC is more or less a coupe version of the all-new Jetta, we can't see why it shouldn't make it into production. Any thoughts?

I couldn't agree more with this article, that is a poor man's Audi A5. It looks all right except for the fact that it is mind numbingly dull.

Nicer than the sedan, that's for sure. Dare I say it's a poor man's A5?

Looks pretty boring, however this is probably for America, since the Europeans already have the Scirocco.

It is a poor man's Audi. But with VW's poor reliability and customer service, most people who buy this will wish they had forked over the extra dough and gotten a decent car. VW gives the illusion of quality and engineering excellence, but it is only skin deep. Once you have to live with it, and all of the problems that VW's service techs are never able to find or duplicate, you will definitely realize why Audi's cost more- you get what you pay for. If you can't afford a more expensive car, then buy something with a decent reputation like a Honda or even a Ford, in the long run you will be happier.

I have never been a fan of VW just because there was no fun , no sparkle in their vehicles, although I know they are good quality. A poor's man audi a5 or not , this jetta coupe along with the sciroco are the only 2 VW that I might like, and enjoy to own !
have a good day

Good I hope no 1 copies this because it looks ghastly.

...but it is one of VW's better efforts of late; it's quite chunky but well-proportioned, like Audis used to be before they got the stupid double-height grille and silly twinkly lights. The interior displays VW's usual lack of imagination though.

It also has a BMW 3 series profile to the greenhouse. I know that Bimmer is RWD and V-dub
will be FWD, but for it to be sucessful, it must be "a poor man's..."!

The exhaust outlets integrated into the rear fascia is a nice touch. It adds some detail to the back. The show car interior looks almost production ready, but I doubt that some of the small details that make it more attractive will make it into production (if it is produced) . Of course, the patent drawings look a bit boring because they are just giving a general idea of what the car will look like. If they don't dumb it down to much it could be a nice mainstream coupe. Coupes based on sedans have never been hugely successful in the 'States however. Volkswagen controls its production and inventory for the 'States to create demand (the GTI is currently one of the more difficult cars to find) so a vehicle like this might have just enough customers to be successful if VW plays its cards right. Also, if they build a performance version, there may be fanboys out there that will flock to it.

the very 1st time, i think, that i prefer a sedan version over a coupe. i do see how they are calling the two door a "poor man's audi A5", but this poor man prefers something a bit sportier. perhaps a slicker audi "A5-like" version, would make me reconsider a jetta coupe. still, i favor the golf gti, as far as smaller sporty vehicles are concerned. the choice in the vw family provides something for everyone is refreshing, though.

Looks beautiful in an understated way. But aside from the conventional grill, this is a bit too close to the A5.

hey is it possible to have the direct link to the official patent drawings?

design can't get any more conservative than this...bravo VW

Take out the VW logo and replaced it with the "four rings" - known as Audi... and people will think it as a next A5 facelift model...
