[Update: More pictures here] Mazda today took the wraps off a new concept model called the Shinari during a special press event near Milan in Italy. The Shinari is a four-door coupe style sports sedan collaboratively designed by Mazda's styling studios in the United States, Germany and Japan. According to the Japanese firm, the sport sedan's styling previews a future design direction for the Mazda brand.
"This design will lead to the next generation of Mazda design and will lead to other elements," Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda Motor Corp.'s design division, told reporters at the event.
According to a report from Autonews, Mazda officials pointed out that the Japanese brand is also looking to further improve interior quality of its future vehicles. "We want to play in the same group as BMW and Audi," said Derek Jenkins, director of design for Mazda North America. "On fit and finish we want the same level of quality."
We're still waiting for an official press release and more photos from Mazda, so stay tuned for an update.

It won't look like that in 2 years, which is a shame because it looks rather nice.
I thought it was a Fisker Karma at first glance.
Nice. They need to replace the current bloated Mazda6 with this design. The previous gen 6 had a sporting look to it. The current 6 looks like an old mans car.

Tesla Concept Cars!!!
This front mid-engine car will become RX-8 replacement.
I don't know about you guys, but this thing looks awesome, and yeah this 4 door coupe could be the right car for those who loved more the practical side of the RX-8, and in the same time will make room for a 2 seats RX-7 for the those who loved the sporty side of the RX-8. So 2 door gt - Mazda RX-7, 4 door coupe Mazda RX-9(Shinari) Both should have rotary engines.
oh~ I see a Hyundai i-Flow Concept here~~
They need to do emergency rhinoplasty to each of their current models to get rid of those damned smiley grills.
Mazda9 anyone?
I'm sorry but they copied off Infiniti. That's the Infiniti Essence. Same shape, same concept.

Franck - you nailed it BUT that's a great combination. Mazda, please bring it & don't water it down. I LOVE the Infiniti Essence & Nissan/Infiniti Group is foolish not to have brought that coupe' out already - it should have been the G37 Coupe or an even higher line such as an Infiniti GTR. Lexus is stalling in the design department too - far too much talent available to do so - I'm still awaiting an SC replacement. When in doubt, hire Fisker, he's responsible for some of the most beautiful designs of our time. Again, Mazda Execs - make the interior as sexy as the exterior with a strong engine & appropriate price - then you'll have a winner. Hyundai appears to be the only company of its type making bold moves - prove me wring Mazda & bring the new R8/7/9 with you.
