Malignant Rumors: Jaguar Considering 2,000 Units a Year of Turbine-Powered C-X75 Halo Car

|

As Porsche begins development on the hybrid 918 Spyder, Jaguar is reportedly taking the idea of a limited-run production version of its Paris Motor Show C-X75 concept into consideration. Autoweek reports that the British luxury marque is discussing the possibility of building up to 2,000 units annually of its XJ220 successor. If you're thinking about getting the checkbook out anytime soon, though, hold it right there.

First, due to production methods and costs, a firm number has to be decided on in regards to the C-X75's volume. Then, over the next five to seven years, Jaguar will try to prove its futuristic micro gas turbines - which are actually cheaper to develop than an internal combustion engine - are feasible for a consumer vehicle.

Tony Harper, head of advanced powertrain development for Jaguar, says, "We're talking two to three years for implementation of the gas-turbine technology, then another three to four years to integrate into a vehicle."

Should this timeline be believed and the bookkeepers give Jag a green light, we could begin seeing mules of the futuristic turbine-powered supercar as early as 2012 or 2013. Don't worry; by 2017 the Matt Beaven-penned C-X75 should still be looking fresh.

An MR I actually want to believe! (This coming from someone who feels Jaguar is so lost that I past Jaguar up at the auto shows; I'll stop and definitely look should this MR come true.)

forget the clean engine, just produce the car with gas engine for now, then replace it with whatever engine Jag can come up with in 2013+5. just to be sure I have to say 2020.

I truly hope Jaguar builds this very beautiful machine and I pray I don't have to wait 7-10 years to drive it. I agree, simply drop a conventional engine in it for now or gas/hybrid
and release the big cat.

Jag, stop fooling around with that eco turbine electric bullshi* and just put in the supercharged V8 that you already have.

Kudos to Jaguar for creating and unleashing an environmentally conscious coupe just as Corporate Average Fuel Economy (or "CAFE", for short) levels are slated to rise yet again as we became more earth friendly and demonstrating a responsibility to our children, grandchildren and generations to come. I am a Mercedes-Benz and Lexus hybrid owner - doing my part while enjoying the success of my blue collar my family's self made business. A guilty pleasure owning luxury automobiles, my passion, but would never had without cleaner admissions and other eco benefits for self, family and world. Yet, we scrimp and save where we can while enjoying large, save and reliable cars now that the MPG's are acceptable and improving even more each model year.

"Jag, stop fooling around with that eco turbine electric bullshi* and just put in the supercharged V8 that you already have." - from above ^

I do have to chuckle when I read such criticism from individuals that I doubt have the means or opportunity to purchase such an expensive car. For those who can, the option of going green should exist across economic lines. You work hard, you play hard and doing so should not force a customer into a nice, yes, but too small for my family Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight, Honda CR-Z or Toyota Prius. I need and desire a fuel efficient car that does not exist for Bentley, Rolls and Maybach budgets that keep the economy afloat with spending.

please jag just go ahead and produce this gorgeous machine....it doesn't really matter what power house you put in it....its a sports car which will need a capable engine to give it a sting and dats all

Fat Chance!

A limited production model of this vehicle will never see the light of day....considering all that is against it.
