2012 Hyundai Veloster Debuts in Detroit, Eyes Honda CR-Z, Scion tC and MINI

|

[Updated Photo Gallery] What started out as the Veloster concept model at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show has come to life as a production model at this week's 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Unlike most other production models that tend to be more conventional than their conceptual siblings, Hyundai's Veloster is actually more outlandish than the 2007 design study thanks to its asymmetric layout with a single door on the driver's side and two conventional doors on the passenger-side.

Hyundai is bullish about the Veloster's rivals as the company released several comparison charts pitting the small coupe against the 2011 Honda CR-Z, Scion tC, Mini Hardtop and Mini Clubman.

According to the South Koreans, the Veloster’s total interior volume of 105.3 cubic feet beats all the aforementioned models, while the automaker also notes that at just 2,584 pounds, its small coupe is more than 400 pounds lighter than the Scion tC.

The company claims the Veloster's exterior design takes inspiration from a high-performance sport bike, while inside, the center stack and controls are said to resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. Hyundai added that the air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console mirrors the seat of a bike.

The Veloster rides on a 104.3-inch wheelbase, with an overall length of 166.1 inches and width of 70.5 inches.

At launch and at least in North America, Hyundai's compact offering will be offered with an all-new 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine featuring Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology. It produces an estimated peak output of 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb.-ft. at 4,850 rpm, and can combined with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an all-new, six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) developed by Hyundai.

The South Korean automaker said the Veloster will return an estimated highway fuel economy of up to 40 mpg.

More details including pricing and availability are to be announced soon.

All we need is that magic price figure and the circle will be complete. If i can't be pulled from an ass, we'll get it from a press release.

As a Hyundai fan boy, I have to say I'm pretty much disappointed, after all this waiting the product isn't really inspiring. The exterior of the car looks really odd (still I have to see it in real life), worse than a lot of renderings on the net. The only thing I like is the interior which looks really interesting

The back looks like the mazda2 with the top chopped off.

Not Hyundai's best, so this is the type of car where I say.."I wouldn't buy it..but I'd take it if it was free :)"

Wow, finally designers manage to combine Audi, Honda, Ford, Mazda, Nissan and Accura cues all in one car face.

Hyundai design has gone impressively cutting edge. All this motorcycle/sport bike influence I guess was started by Mazda with front fenders shaped to recall motorcycle fenders. Even S class Mercedes picked up on it (maybe the first time anything went from Asia to Europe instead of the other way around). Ford maybe started the overwrought dashboard stuff with the Euro (now here) Focus and Fiesta, which has spilled over to all new Hyundais.

Here's an idea: car design inspired by being, you know, a car. In the long run, it's the simple stuff that doesn't get old. Check out a 1961 Lincln Continental. The current Sonata looks like it is inspired by the latest bicycle helmets as much as sport bikes. In a few years it will probably look old hat, while the simpler, not trying as hard Buick Regal/Opel Insignia will still look cool.

In style I prefer the CR-Z, but the engine figures are a win in the Veloster.

This may be a success in the States, but I doubt it will sell well here in Europe. Unless it can beat cars like the DS3, in terms of price, people will prefer something more "traditional".

PS: that third door, its a cool idea and nicely integrated, but I really need symmetry to like a car.

While i am a major fan of Hyundai/Kia designs of late, i have to say this one is a major FAIL! All the hype for nothing!

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

I'm not diggin' this 3 door thing. Why couldn't hyundai just pick 2 or 4 doors and just make, you know, a car?

I know of one other car in history where the drivers door was not the same size as the passenger door, and that was the AMC Pacer, and look how well that turned out.

Please put that away, it's disgusting.

I have always been a Honda fan boy, but man I have to say after seeing this car I now know which of the two cars from this and the Honda Cr-z I want. The Hyundai Veloster is so much better looking and has cutting edge style while Honda's Cr-z is pretty boring looking and ugly.Hyundai I will be trading in my 2006 Honda civic coupe for this beauty. Nice job Hyundai you hit the mark and blew the Honda CR-Z out of the water

Hyundai has created anther winner

The worst of the show! It looks horrid in person. Many of us there today were mystified by the disastrous response from the journalists. Shame. The company was on a roll until their new cars were unveiled today... and I am being kind.

the party is over. sticking with honda :)

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

Hyundai has created a loser. The Sonata is hot. This is NOT!!!

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

Yep...no comment. I guess the Scion Tc is still on TOP!

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

the toyota matrix looks far better. same with ford's smaller fiesta and the cool upcoming focus. i will probably buy a ford product when i trade my kia soul in this spring.

honda, you earned my business. again. i heard great things about this car (even from carscoop posters) & had high expectations. the entire car is fugly. what's with the grille? well... it all needs to be scrapped.

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

hyundai this is very nice looking. I agree with the honda fan boy that this is anther winner for hyundai

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

lol scion tc on top? what stuff are you smoking man? that car is butt ugly as of the redsign for 2011. Hyundai has the best looking of the 3 small pocket rockets from honda scion hyundai. I can't wait to see the veloster ion black. I am going to be loving me some veloster in black

Oh dog hyundai you have made one bitchin looking coupe! Hyundai is one a roll that never stops and to the hyundai haters posting your false reviews, pleazzzz what ever yo

"hyundai this is very nice looking. I agree with the honda fan boy that this is anther winner for hyundai"

- exposed! you and honda fan boy cannot spell. "another", NOT ANTHER is how the word is spelled. you keep writing duplicate, hateful, attacking blog posts. you are not a honda owner i would say. we love our cars, respect others and do not jump all over other people. as i said before, let us try to appreciate the opinion of others. not into this ugly attack method. as a boater, not just car enthusiast, there is an unspoken code of ethics i try to post by. thanks.

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

i hope it isnt too expensive. Although it isnt starting a car lust, I will withhold my opinion until i can get a close and personal look at the dealership.

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

I really like the Scion TC. It has pretty distinct lines that do not mimic Toyota, Lexus or copycat other makes or models. I, too, like the Hyundai Sonata and a few Kia's, but they missed the boat at Detroit.

I drove the Scion TC but am still in the market, only because I decided against a coupe. The unique panorama roof for such a reasonably priced two door is appealing. The Civic Si sedan concept unveiled today seems to have a large glass roof area that I hope makes production. I want something fresh, unique, but not over styled such as the car above.

after seeing this, i'd buy a scion. i like the kia elantra and new honda civic a lot, but not this ugly car. it is just awful.

So,what have we learned today kids? That's right, just because you're on top of your game doesn't mean your immune to totally dropping the ball.Goddamn,Hyundai really screwed the pooch on this one...

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

as a hyundai fanboy i really dunno wat 2 say about the veloster, they shud have ditched the air scoop lines in the front fascia and made the tailights sleeker IMO it's a nice car. This will clearly have to grow on me and other hyundai fans

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2011

Well Hyundai was on a roll but this ugly POS proves they are human. Even if the performance is good , no man would want to be seen in this. You can choose from CRZ, Scion TC etc so this will fail badly.

Braddo said... »January 11, 2011

They will sell shitloads of these.

Anonymous said... »January 11, 2011

Was intreaged by the sketches, warmed up with the teaser shots, then just kicked to the ground by this disappointing production version. I was hoping for a great brother to the Coupe, but we got the ugly sister.

Anonymous said... »January 11, 2011

Ok this veloster is nice looking .To the hyundai fan boy your not really a hyundai fan boy btw and don't you think we all can't see your writing all these bad reviews. Really come on grow up and stop being afraid of Hyundai . You're post give you away you little child

Anonymous said... »January 11, 2011

This looks very interesting. I used to be a Honda guy, but over the last decade, I've embraced the Kia/Hyundai fare. They continue to bring out the most interesting new product, and it's quality stuff, too. I'll put this on my list to check out.

Anonymous said... »January 11, 2011

I'm a Hyundai boyfan, I mean fanboy, and I like the overall execution of the CR-Z.

Anonymous said... »January 11, 2011

Woah... lots of criticism about the Veloster here... Take it easy guys... On a positive side, I would say Hyundai is trying to create and produce a controversial (and quirky) "two-face (or sides)" car... and they did it well...

Imo, Hyundai has manage to trade their "bland" image for a "daring" and "dynamic" brand... and that is not a bad thing. It is good to try something unique once a while, but never overdo it... Hyundai deserved my applause...

I heard comparisons to the VW Scirroco. NOT! Epic fail, this thing is hideous! The VW Scirroco blows this thing away in the looks department. And even worse is the Scion TC, those things are UGLY! Ve-lost-her interests!

I'm posting as an anonymous Ssangyong Motors fanboy who's acting like a Honda fanboy who's acting like a Hyundai fanboy who's acting like a Honda faboy who's acting like a Hyundai fanboy who's exposing other anonymous fanboy by finding errors in their spelling and then calling them out as fanboys of Honda posing as fanboys of Hyundai acting like fanboys for Honda.

Ummm....

Fuck da haters! Ssangyong Motors rules!!!

Anonymous said... »January 11, 2011

Oh sure,China rocks just like communism and sweatshops.

Anonymous said... »January 12, 2011

Ssangyong is Korean..

Anonymous said... »January 16, 2011

Some parts of the front end seem a little odd, but the rest finishes up nicely.

Put a Turbo in it and daddy can have a little fun when the mom and kids are busy elsewhere.

I think it will sell well.

Anonymous said... »January 16, 2011

LOL, OK to all these fake Hyundai fan boys that are here writing bad reviews for a hot car their jealous of let me just tell the truth. You all are nutty as they all come. This car is one sweet looking ride and Hyundai is still doing great here. It will sell more then the Honda CR-Z because the Veloster has better looks and gets as good MPG on the highway and for less money all around. The Veloster and CR-Z could be the next Mustang VS carmeo for decades to Come. Yes Hyundai has the better car right now but Honda will get back on it's feet and make the CR-Z a killer green ride like the Veloster is now. Yea I like both a lot, just I would buy the Veloster for the better bang for the buck and slighty better looks. A true Hyundai fan boy will always like the Veloster and a true honda fan boy willl always like the CR-Z. Its people like me that counts and right now my vote is for the Veloster but it could change if Honda get with it and makes the CR-Z a better ride, better bang for the buck and has better MPG . These two are about looks, price and MPG and any fool can see the Hyundai Veloster has edged out the CR-Z. Now if there was no Veloster then I would buy the CR-Z.

This is the right way! Brave design, not the new old car, or new worse looking car from european companies. So many new VWs, Audis and one Ford (the new focus) are worse or not better at least in terms of outlook, or almost the same.

Like this car, really do
