Unless you've been living under a rock, you know by now that Hyundai unveiled its Veloster coupe at the 2011 Detroit Motor Show. So, what's with the 'scoop' title of our post, we here you ask? Well, this here example is the European spec Veloster and it was caught undisguised by our spies in Germany ahead of its debut at the at the Geneva Salon in the beginning of March.
The only visible styling changes over the North American model concern the use of clear indicators up front, all-red tail lamps at the back and the newly styled alloy wheels. Unfortunately, our spies couldn't get close enough to the prototype to snag the interior, but don't expect to see any significant modifications other than trim and color options.
Up until now, we were in the dark about the engine lineup of the European model. However, we just learned from an official source that the Veloster will be offered with two gasoline engines including a flagship turbocharged four banger.
The Veloster will launch in Europe with the same 1.6-liter direct-injection four-banger as the NA-spec model, producing 140-horsepower and 167 Nm of peak torque for a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of under 10 seconds. Power is transferred to the front wheels through a standard six-speed manual gearbox, or an optional dual-clutch transmission.
Europeans will also get a Blue Edition version that pairs the 140-horse motor with a start-stop system and some additional fuel-saving features, which help drop CO2 levels from 138 g/km to 129 g/km.
The crown jewel of the Veloster lineup will be a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct-injection technology and an output of 208-horsepower, allowing the car to complete the standard sprint in around 7 seconds. We don't know if or when Hyundai will offer this engine in North America.
The naturally aspirated models will go on sale in most European countries this April, with the UK following later in the year. The Veloster 1.6 Turbo will be added to the range in early 2012.

I sincerely hope Hyundai offers the 1.6 turbo in N.A. I'd like to see the addition of a rear wiper as well.
I like how this looks!
it's too cluttered.Hyundai's version of the awkward Civic glass hatch?
The more I see of this, the more I like. Hyundai definitely has another winner!
Don't like it. Too many curvy lines. A bit more conservative outlook would be a better solution for us Europeans.
WOW! I WANT A HYUNDAI!
There we go, I've said it, phew feel better now.
Can you please, please prevent this monstrosity to hit European streets?
I dare you to find one sane European citizen who will prefer this over a Civic.
Lol I actually really like this design. Well done Hyundai, I really hope you don't change the final production model from this one. Great job outside, really!
Hyundai Seems to have gone back to the 'left in the oven for too long' look of the 90's (Coupe etc).
Only this time they got it right it seems.
Hope they add a 1.6 or 2.0 CRDi for Europe.
the wheels is not Veloster's
it's from Sonata
Looks like that with the headlamp design difference the Euro version will have wing mirror indicators as standard across the whole range.
Weirdly enough if you look at the Velosters unveiled at Detroit, the matt grey one was already sporting the clear headlamp indicators/reflectors with wing mirror indicators in lieu.....
It's too much of lines, curves. The overall shape is attractive, bet the details are messed up. No offence, but I dont like it.
Sorry, but as hard as I try to like it, this is still one ugly duckling to me. Don't see it ever gaining any mass appeal.
When I saw the US version that came out in Detroit, I thought Hyundai failed on this car. But thank God, seeing the European version, I have to say it'll get a lot of attention! Good job Hyundai, Imma get one.
This thing is butt ugly.
agreed a real ugky duckling! and that's coming from a Seat Freetrack owner..........
will the rear 3rd door swap sides for a UK version? Unlike the similar in concept Mini Clubman
It looks like crushed DS3.
the price of the car will be its appeal and hyundai likes to give north america all their gas engine options so the turbo should make it here, albeit after its launch just like the sonata.
This car truly splits opinion and that has to be a good thing, I am definitely on the love it team, yet can see why people would hate it, the looks are chunky, purposeful and if it is priced similar or lower to a VW scirocco it will be a hit
First pictures were attractive, now in grey it's just not nice... As other said: too complicated, too many curves.
It also reminds me of a PGO Hemera
hyundai is hit in the world with this veloster,I hope hyundai bring the 1.6 gdi turbo to u.s.a and add the LED tai light
With the turbo it has more HP then the Genesis 2.0 Turbo Coupe and much lighter weight, should be a hot rod.
agree with the ds3 comment above..
Hyundai is on a roll...
208 hp from a 1.6 liter ,Nice.. That is 130 hp per liter. Pretty impressive Hyundai. This car does look edgy and sporty though/ i can see how it at first slipts reactions down the middle. this is either a love it or hate it car. I love it and which seems to be getting more love it then hate it reactions.
Car scoop should have a compression of the Honda CR-Z and Hyundai Veloster to settle which is the better car. I sure some car magazine or web site will do this and I am betting on the Veloster being the winner
The veloster concept was introduced 2007 while the DS3 concept was 2009. So who copied who?
The 3 door platform is an ingenious idea. Practicality is not sacrificed for sportiness. Ive always loved 2-doors but its a hassle when you have a passenger at the back. This solves that problem.
mmm, looks awful, but the asymmetric door is interesting.
Man that is a nice looking car. I want one with a 1.6 turbo here in the states. 140 hp is not enough for me
I like it very much!
Nice car, well done Hyundai!
"The veloster concept was introduced 2007 while the DS3 concept was 2009. So who copied who?"
no company in its right mind would copy this disastrous mess.
god, it's ugly!
Seeing the production likely version at the international auto show in Detroit, Hyundai lost its way with this one. Kia concepts were no better. As a fan of the company, they lost their mojo. I was ashamed. Puke.
fugly? u bet!
I never laughed so hard. Ugly ducking is no swan.
No thanks!
I was waiting for this car ever since news broke. I'm totally disappointed in it. It is worse than the Pontiac Aztec. Stupid idea of just one rear door. It has been done before on a Saturn coupe and the company went under. Hyundai lost its way. Their cars are all beginning to look the same, the main complaint I hear selling them. Yet, the sedans look sharp enough to sell well. Things are slowing for us after great momentum having the flavor of the month in a sea of stiff competition. We have begged for something different. The old adage is true. Be careful what you ask for. Potential customers at my dealership are turned off already. The Genesis coupe did not get off the ground and I cannot move them. Thank goodness for the Sonata and Elantra. We lose many potential clients for lack of a V6, but the turbo Sonata is powerful enough, imo. The newly introduced Kia Optima gets mixed reactions. For a smooth ride, the Sonata is the way to go if you like the swoopy design. We also feature Ford products, including Lincoln and see customers waiting for the new '12 Focus vs. buying a Kia or Hyundai. More are driving the 2011 Fiesta and '10 & '11 Fusions off of the lot in great droves. I personally think Ford's are better built, but the multitude of brands offer a lot of choice for customers.
pity it is so shitty;)
interesting comment above (not directly above), good to hear that the Fiesta is generally liked in the US, it's a great little car, and they are everywhere in Europe. I have to say though... I'm rather keen on this Hyundai and will definitely be checking it over once it arrives in Norway, oh and Mini tried the 3rd door thing on their Clubman and they certainly are not going bust. Like it or not Hyundai is a brand on the up.
oh my the haters have arrived with their lies of being fans ...LOL truth be told it could be as great as a Porsche and the haters would hate it even more for being even more better. cant win with haters so ignore the faux fan haters
on a main note this car is really a beautiful sheet of metal....good job Hyundai, yet anther mess hit just like the sonata genesis's ....
Still no cost figure.
Still not caring.
The more I see haters, the more I like it!
Now everybody get back to your '89 supercar!
"Now everybody get back to your '89 supercar!"
Well why not? Whatever an '89 supercar' is is likely better to look at, RWD, and doesn't 3 doors.
Calling people who don't like the car haters just shows how easily you can't take people not liking the car for what it is; it's a weak character trait of yours.
Who ever approved of that front end must of been BLIND !
squint and its just a Kia C'eed thats hit a wall at speed. The old Coupe was a great car for the price but this certainly isn't. Why can't they just release the Genesis they get elsewhere in the world
fell outa the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. plus the front end looks like a rats face! the only thing i like about this car is the engine choice and i totally agree with the above statement the coupe/tiburon/tuscani was a beauty of a car and i think hyundai need to shoot their new designers. pity they're in the wrong half of korea for that.
mix of Cistroen DS3, Aston one77, Renault megane and a ..... duck
I bet y'all haters cant even draw for shit to make a better looking car. If u dont like it, dont buy it. Simple as that. Trash talk your own faces instead of the car.
It may look better when they get the disguise panels off it.
its definately an interesting design, especially the rear 3/4 which i do like, but im gonna wait til i see one in the metal before making my mind up on it.
only real question i've got about it is will they swap the rear door to the other side for uk or leave it as is like the mini clubman?
This POS is a great example of the radically different sense of aestethics that run between americans and europeans. VEEEEEEEEEERY FEW (if any at all) europeans would be caught dead driving this absurd blob. Yet, to most americans it looks fantastic, just like many other catfish looking hyundais that are designed specifically for the US market...
I will take one. Thank you.
I think it has huge potential. I just don't know how folks in the states will react to it. I hope we get the turbo charged engine here in the states.
Looks better and probably more reliable than the VW GTI.
Old story, needs update saying the turbo model to be released in North America, Summer 2012
This is a nice ride!

ohhh man i read that as 280 hp n i was like waaaaaaaaattt thatsss maaaaaaaaaadddd...lol...they gotta make a 4wd version soon
And yet so many people like and love the golf...now I don't care if the vw is reliable or what but That IS UGLY!
wouldn't it be nice to see the turbo veloster in AWD...and for that matter also as an option on the new genesis and Azera models?

I think look luxury
Its a Citroen DS3 rip off on styling!
