One of the victims of the March earthquake and the Tsunami that followed was Japan’s auto industry and especially Toyota, which saw many of its suppliers hit hard by the dual natural disaster. The result was that production slowed down considerably, and sales took a hit all around the globe relegating the former No 1 carmaker in the world to third place.
Today, Toyota Motor announced that its domestic production rose in August for the first time in the last 12 months. Specifically, the Toyota brand’s production alone increased by 11.9%, to 252,374 units, and if we include its two affiliates, Daihatsu and Hino, the combined increase reaches 12.0%, or 311,153 units.
Toyota’s global production increased last month by 11.0%, to 702,603 vehicles. Moreover, even though domestic sales fell by 18.4% in August, exports made up for it with the exact same percentage of increase.
The Japanese company has already announced that it expects its production to fully recover by November and it also plans to produce a further 350,000 units until next March to make up for the first half of the year’s lost sales.
