New Toyota Prius C: Leaked Brochure Reveals Standalone Small Hybrid Hatch

We got our first taste of the next member to join Toyota's growing family of Prius models with the Prius C concept study that made its debut alongside the Prius V minivan at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year.

But today, thanks to a tip from a Carscoop reader in Japan who goes by the nickname "i-Ryuji", we can show you the actual production version of the Prius C through a plethora of scanned images from a leaked brochure.

With a big stretch of imagination, you might see the resemblance between the concept study and the production variant of the Prius C that evolves the design language of the regular Prius liftback.

The interior styling is a bit funkier with a center-mounted dashboard and at least in Japan, the ability to customize the look of the cabin with different upholstery and colored trim accents.

You won’t be surprised to learn that the Japanese language is not our forte, but in one of the spec sheets, it appears that Toyota compares the Prius C with several rivals in Japan including the Mazda2 13-Skyactive.

On the same page, the first column (with the G, S and L trim designations) includes the basic specifications of the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Prius C.

The smallest member of the Prius family measures 3,995mm (157.3-in.) long, 1,695mm (66.7-in.) wide, and 1,445mm (56.9-in.) tall, and has a wheelbase length of 2,550mm (100.4-in.). This means it's barely bigger than the latest Yaris (153.5" long, 66.7" wide, 59.4" tall, with a 98.8" wheelbase).

The brochure also tells us that power will come from a hybrid unit that combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine delivering 74HP at 4,800 rpm and 111Nm (81.9 lb-ft) of torque at 4,800 rpm, and an electric motor producing up to 61-horses and 169Nm (125 lb-ft) with a CVT. The hybrid system's combined output (in JDM tune) is rated at 100HP.

Toyota estimates that the front-wheel drive hybrid will return a fuel consumption of 35.4 km/lt (equal to 83.3 mpg US or 2.8lt/100km) on the Japanese JC08 driving cycle and up to 40 km /lt (94 mpg US or 2.5lt/100 km) on the 10.15 mode driving cycle.

We would like to stress that the above fuel efficiency numbers should not be used for direct comparison as the Japanese driving cycles differ from the U.S. and European combined measurements. For example, in Japan, Toyota says that the regular Prius returns up to 38 km/lt, which is equal to 89.4mpg and 2.6lt/100km, while the U.S. model is rated at 50mpg combined.

So, when and where will we see the new Prius C making its debut? The JDM model will receive its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show in December while Toyota recently revealed that the North American debut would take place in Detroit in January of 2012.

During the U.S. media presentation of the new Prius Plug-in Hybrid in California in mid-September, Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager, Bob Carter, mentioned the new Prius C in his speech:

"The Prius v will be followed by the Prius Plug-in next March, and the Prius c will follow in the Spring," said Carter. "The Prius c will offer expressive styling in a city-friendly vehicle that we believe will be the most fuel efficient hybrid without a plug in the U.S. While we showed you a “c Concept” at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, we will be debuting the production Prius c for the first time in Detroit this coming January."

And there you have it. Scroll down to check out the brochure pictures and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Pretty nice! I don't think I'd buy one, though unless it gets amazing mpg.

Should of just made the Yaris a hybrid if it was gonna look like this sheesh......

Fyi JDM will be called "Aqua".

I didn't want to like the Prius, yet after using one frequently I have come round to the benefits of them, it all depends where you live I guess, but living in a city where you don't have to pay expensive road tolls and parking it is perfect, and a completely comfortable, calm (if not exciting) drive.

This new small will only add to the appeal of the Prius, can see it being hugely popular, wondering what the point of the Yaris will be and the Auris Hybrid even more so!?

I'd be interested in buying one, I must be getting old/brainwashed, really like it!

Looks like somebody's been raiding the Toyota parts bin. I see Aygo, Avensis Verso and Prius in this one ;) .

Matrix Hybrid?

Looks good...but I wouldn't want one.

I like it and would definitely buy one if I could.

After riding in a Prius and eventually renting one, my wife and I have come around and love Prii.  They are fantastic cars in every area except styling, but even that has grown on us.

It is a little big for us, which is why the smaller one would be just right.

I even like the styling on this one.

I wonder if an electric/gas hybrid is easily converted to all electricity down the road.

If we can swing it, we will get one.

I have a 2004 Prius and have had zero problems with it-still love driving it. I usually keep a car for 8-10 years so this new prius c is right on time. I love the looks and well 60 MPG sounds good to me.  Can't wait to buy this new prius

I love my prius and also love this new smaller prii....

the biggest obstacle so far to having more competition and nationwide charging is our own govt. trying to prop up detroit who can't find its' head out of a paper bag after being bailed out with our own money.  therefore we could have all elec. vehicles and a lot more competition without 'big govt'...pisses me off about free market this free market that when our own auto cos. (or banks) can't survive on their own merits, and are too big to fail but somehow still incapable of designing or building anything anybody wants.

I do like this smaller prii AND the upcoming ford focus electric which is also pretty sporty.  ford didn't take any bailout and anticipates future market which is the type of company we should be supporting in a globally competitive economy.  Other 'us' auto cos. seem to keep just wishing for yesteryear and designing commensurately with this antiquated belief system.  Our govt needs to stop the constant verbal diarrhea of free market and needs to actually allow more innovative technologies developed elsewhere....there is tons out there in the 'wide world' outside these protectionist borders.

I was very disappointed that honda has pretty much dropped the ball thus far on getting in on ANY promising new technology...

all the media just states they are waiting to do this or do that....but so far nothing significant on horizon for honda.  and if anything does come out like elec. or hybrid fit, it doesn't make it here anyway.  so US are still 2/3 consumers economy even though we only consume whatever govt.allows as our 'choice' in our 'democracy'.    Don't even get me started on how very few innovative motorcycles/scooters make it to US due to 'lack of demand'.  *has to have a HEMI to race to walmart to support China.

Styling is very disfunctional and why revert to a conventional shifter and handbrake, seems a retrograde step. The original Prius has an outstanding shape regardless of detractors who obviously don't have an eye for the flow and continuity of its styling.

What happened to that compelling looking concept car that Toyota was showing? This car is weak sauce compared to that.

Lars said... »October 19, 2011

It looks great, I hope they will offer the colors and interiors shown in this Japanese brochure in the USA cars and not dumb them down to the all grey interiors, and dull conservative exterior colors of the present cars.

...can toyota do anything original or does they have to steal everything they do? Honda Fit profile and packaging...even the interior is right out of the Fit. The front end is a page right out of Hyundai's latest. Ridiculous rip-off.

Stacy Nelson 2006 said... »October 21, 2011

Definitely doesn't look as good as the concept but the outside isn't bad.  The inside, however, looks bad ... and cheap.  Any ideas on what the cargo space will be behind the back seat (seat up)?

Chrisirish1965 said... »October 27, 2011

Have a deposit on one already...just awaiting delivery in March...can't wait to get 60 mpg instead of the 22mpg my Honda Odyssey gets.  Doing home health in rural Maine and hope that a set of studded snows will suffice for the winter months.  Keeping the minivan for road trips with the kids, dog, etc as this new Prius C or Aqua looks as teeny as my wife's Honda Fit (she averages 34 mpg...not as good as expected).

Ask_me_if_i_care said... »October 31, 2011

I'm so outraged when i saw the C concept i literally started saving money so when it came out i could put a good down payment on one and since i already have a toyota and i know they are reliable i had no problem getting another one....NOW this is what i get!! Looks like im going back to buying a MINI bc this is U-G-L-Y and looks nothing like the Concept version AT ALL!!!!

Mdee46 said... »November 04, 2011

was waiting for the Prius v but they are WAY overpriced.  This Prius c looks like it will more than "fill the bill" for our needs and should be priced UNDER the standard Prius ... we hope.

This is the size of non plug-in hybrid I've been waiting for. If it gets the kind of mileage they're touting, where can I place my order NOW?

Bud VanLoon said... »November 09, 2011

Come on Ford! You SHOULD be able to match this! Time to get your MPG act together!
I would like to buy American, but give me a car that will get 50+ MPG!?

Very disappointed with the design of this car. I wanted something closer to the concept. I think they would have sold alot more models if it was designed like the concept in the commercial. With engines similar to this in other vehicles, and better design, I think Toyota did a disservice to this vehicle and the prius line. I will be holding out for another stylish hybrid...

Vin Roybal said... »February 23, 2012

Very disappointed with the style of the #priusC. I think they should have stuck closer to the design of the concept. I think they would have tripled sales if they had done so, I was waiting on this cool looking concept to hit the dealerships, guess I will have to go with Kia, instead... You made me sad :( #Toyota.. Very Sad...

Many have been saying that it looks nothing like the concept car...any
now with this car on the horizon, a Yaris Hybrid is pointless. This is
pretty much that, and definitely, the Matrix just won't fit the lineup anymore now that the Prius v and c are coming to fruition, with the 'c'
promising better MPG than the regular Prius. Matrix sales are a drop in
the bucket compared to Corollas, so I don't think Toyota wants to continue making them, though I think the Auris has enough difference
that would on our shores.

The styling package version 1 looks cool, but the version 2 looks a
little too bold for a car in this segment (unless its an FRS or
something hi po, it doesn't need to stand out that much).
