There's a new frugal kid in town or rather in Japan, the 2012 Suzuki Alto Eco that promises an impressive fuel economy of up to 32km/L (~75.3mpg US or 3.1lt/100km) in the Japanese 10-15 test cycle and 30.0km/L in the JC08 driving cycle.
The most fuel-efficient version of the Alto series is powered by Suzuki's new R06A 0.66-liter three-cylinder engine featuring a start/stop system borrowed from the third-generation MR Wagon. It produces an output of 52-horses at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 63Nm (46.5 lb-ft) at 4,000 rpm.
An improved continuously variable transmission (CVT) handles the gear shifting duties powering the front wheels.
The 2012 Alto Eco will be offered in Japan in two trim levels, "S" and "L" with pricing set at 995,000 Yen (US$12,830) and 895,000 Yen (US$11,540) respectively. Sales will start on December 13.

No frills, simple, fuel miserly efficient with Japanese reliability...that's what Suzuki can bring over to the US (if ever, remotely) to counter the Smarts, Fiats 500's and other burgeoning small (or city) cars.
this is the car that i saw on Sherman Way (San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles, CA, USA) November 23rd. it had a license plate with a country starting with B--colorful letters on white background. are they testing it for the US market?
I can't see it being powerful enough to do highway driving but it sure would make a great little city car. If I lived in a city and this car was sold here in the good old usa then I would buy it for the gas milage.
and it had left-steering wheel dash configuration!
License plate with colorful letters on white background and left hand drive config...
You must've seen a MX market New Swift..it does look similar to the Alto and is available across the border. Some MX drivers do come up across the border and I've seen quite a few unique rides till I look closely at the lic plates...Baja Ca MX.
Very good city runner. 32K/L is amazing. Interiors are very attractive and innovatively designed. Look at the rear legroom..gosh. But could do something about that penis stick of a gear shift.
very nice what will be price in India.
When will start the booking?
75mpg is 3,1L/100Km (manufacturer data)
But my Golf does 4,2L/100Km (manufacturer data) and in reality is a 5,5L/100Km.
This means this Suzuki will do 5L/100Km if there are 2 persons in the car.
At least you can park it with the bicycles ;)
I would have bought an Alto here in Australia, but literally can't find one for sale, anywhere. I just wanted ONE paradise blue manual Suzuki Alto Gxl Gf. Is that too much to ask?
Cuando llega a chile este modelito "alto Eco" y cuanto costara..???
