In 2011, BMW’s M division launched not one, but two new models: the 1 M Coupe and the M5. At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, the Bavarian automaker will introduce a new product range, named M Performance Automobiles that will sit between the regular and the M models – possibly something in the likes of Audi’s S lineup.

According to BMW, the M Performance range will be a showcase for the M division genes, offering exclusive engine variants, more precise handling, improved agility and a “more emotional” design but without comprising everyday driving characteristics.

“We are targeting our efforts at customers looking for more emotionality and performance, but who don’t want to forgo the everyday usability of their cars”, said president of BMW M GmbH Dr. Friedrich Nitschke.

Nitschke added that BMW’s new project refers to a variety of model series, including both petrol and diesel-engined variants: “The BMW M Performance Automobiles benefit for the full expertise of BMW M GmbH”.

If this all sounds a little hazy, Dr. Nitschke clarified it a bit by bringing up an analogy: the new range will be the 21st century of the 1980 M535i, which while not a pure M model offered more power, a sportier chassis and modified design. “Our aim is to continue this tradition”, he explained.

The sporty diesel version of the X6 crossover that has been video teased several times will likely be one of the first M Performance models.
