Some 23 years and one model change after Land Rover introduced the original Discovery back in 1989, the British automaker rolled out the 1,000,000th example of its capable SUV at the Jaguar-Land Rover’s Solihull assembly plant in the UK.

The Discovery, which first came to market as a third model sitting between the more luxurious Range Rover and the rough’n’tough Defender, set records sales of almost 45,000 units last year across 170 worldwide markets.

To celebrate the milestone production, Land Rover is organizing a special trip that will see three Discovery SUVs traveling from Birmingham, UK, through more than a dozen countries across Europe and Central Asia, finishing at the Beijing motor show on 23 April.

The journey will take 50 days to complete with the 4x4s covering some 8,000 miles in the process.

Phil Popham, Group Sales Operations Director, Jaguar Land Rover commented: “Discovery is an extraordinary vehicle and it deserves to be unleashed on an extraordinary journey. There is no better vehicle to tackle all weather, all terrain than the Discovery 4. This gruelling expedition will be visiting 13 countries and covering 8,000 miles, and it’s a fitting initiative to celebrate the one millionth vehicle.”

The expedition, which is named ‘Journey of Discovery’, also aims to raise £1million (US$1.6 million or €1.17 million) for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support their water sanitation project in Uganda.
