A massive recall for some 1.3 million BMW models worldwide, including approximately 367,000 vehicles sold in the United States and 290,000 in Germany is underway.
The Bavarian automaker said that the recall affects all previous generation 5-Series and 6-Series models built between 2003 and 2010.
According to a statement released by the automaker, in some "remote cases", the battery cable cover inside the boot of the affected models may not have been correctly installed.
"This can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire," said BMW.
The company says it not aware of any accidents or injury to persons resulting from the defect.
"Vehicle owners will be notified in writing. Affected vehicles will remain at the respective BMW Partner repair workshop for approximately 30 minutes, the service, of course, being free of charge to the customer," BMW said in a statement.

Really BMW? Because you get slapped with a fine a short while ago does not mean you need to knee jerk. In some 'remote' cases...'may' not have been installed correctly. yeah, whatever. If there were malfunctions, we would have heard about them already. Anyhoo, good on ya. I guess once bitten, twice shy.
I noticed The 90s through mid-2000s BMWs have a lot of quality and maintenance issues. Everybody I know that has a BMW has had numerous problems, problems that the owners of comparable Japanese cars, Lexus, Infiniti etc. never seem to have. Also the maintenance costs, parts and labor, for BMWs are ridiculously high in the US. These issues always seem to be more prevalent among their downmarket cars, mostly the 3 series and below. I don't know anyone who has the newer 5, 6, and 7 series cars, how do they fare in this department?
Seems there are a lot of BMW owners who visit here, what do you have to say? What issues have you experienced?
My dads friend leased a 7 series back in 2008 for 3 years and he had no problems. He also got his son a 2007 5 series last year and so far it also has no problems.
