The Volkswagen brand’s commercial division is represented at the 2012 Geneva Auto Salon with a new concept version of the Amarok pickup truck named Canyon that has been configured for those that compete in the extreme sport of ‘freestyle kayaking’.
The two carbon fibre kayaks are mounted to the cargo floor while the paddles are latched on the inside surface of the tailgate.
“We are using this extreme concept to illustrate one of the many diverse uses of the Amarok,” explained Wolfgang Schreiber, the head of VW Commercial Vehicle. “By tuning its design to an extreme sport, we are bringing the original DNA of the Amarok into focus.”
The Geneva show car is taller and wider than the regular model and comes equipped with an array of features ranging from auxiliary headlights mounted on its roof to a pair of electrically deployed tread plates.
The vehicle’s ride height was raised by 40 mm with a body lift kit, whilst if you take into consideration the new 275/65 R 18 tires, the concept is a full 85 mm taller than the production model.
Other highlights include the special exterior paint job and the leather treatment inside along with the three auxiliary instruments that show the climbing and tilt angles of the Amarok and which are housed in a cowl in the cockpit.
The concept is powered by the series production model’s 2.0-liter bi-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel rated at 180PS (178bhp) and 400Nm (295 lb-ft), linked to a manual transmission and VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system together with a reduction gearbox and differential lock at the rear axle.
