Infiniti Crafts a Premium Family Car Concept out of the Leaf's Platform and EV Components [Video]

This is the Infiniti LE Concept that made its world debut today at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The LE is a pure-electric, four-door family sedan mechanically related to the Leaf EV.

While this is the first time we see the concept in the flesh, Infiniti has been talking about the LE since the 2010 Paris Motor Show as it intends to put the car in production within the next two years.

“As a ‘production intent’ concept, most of what you see in the LE Concept will become a reality, including its zero emission powertrain, advanced telematics, cutting-edge design, advanced connected services and premium appointments,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore.

As a more upmarket model than the Leaf, the larger LE features a more stylish exterior design full of waves and creases, while also sporting Infiniti’s new signature double-arch grille and crescent-cut rear-pillar. The sedan model has a rather low coefficient of drag of 0.25.

“The LE Concept exterior is shaped to maximize its aerodynamic efficiency, yet it doesn’t scream ‘electric vehicle.’ The design priorities are on visibility, hospitality and utility – and, of course, Infiniti-ness,” said Poore.

“The same can be said of the interior, which takes advantage of the low-noise drivetrain to provide the tranquil quietness of a living room, though one that offers far more exhilaration and mobility,” he adds.

The concept model measures 186.4 inches long, 71.1 inches wide and 58.5 inches tall, and rides on a wheelbase of 106.3 inches (same as the Leaf).

It is propelled by a 100kW electric motor rated at 134 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, which is fed by a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery. The front wheel drive model can cover a distance of around 100 miles (160 kilometers) before the battery runs out of juice.

In terms of charging, the LE Concept is equipped to make use of an integrated charging port, a DC Fast Charge option and an advanced Wireless Charging System.

“With the Wireless Charging and Intelligent Park Assist, there are no cables, no maintenance and no concern about the perfect alignment of vehicle and charger,” said Poore. “So, on top of no longer having to pump gas, you will no longer have to connect charging cables,” he added.
