The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) announced on its website that Volkswagen is recalling two models for different reasons in the United States.

More specifically, the Germany automaker is recalling 153 diesel-powered 2012 Passat sedans built from January 18, 2011, through June 1, 2011, because the diesel fuel filter element may not have been sealed correctly.

“Over time, or after certain driving distances, these vehicles [the 2012 Passat TDI] are susceptible to fuel leakage. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, may lead to a fire,” NHTSA said on its website.

The company will fix the problem by replacing the diesel fuel filter element free of charge, with the recall expected to start in May.

VW’s second recall affects 15 Routan minivans from the 2012 model year, manufactured from November 15, 2011, through November 21, 2011, and is directly linked to the Chrysler Group’s recall of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, as all three cars share the same hardware.

As is the case with Chrysler’s models, the Routan may suffer from problematic right rear hub and bearing assemblies that could lead to wheel separation. This recall will begin before the end of April.
