Kia Wants to Know What it Should Name the K9 Flagship for Overseas Markets

|

For our 2012 April Fool's Day joke, we hacked in a BMW grille and renamed Kia's new K9 flagship sedan the 9'Series for the North American market. True, our designation cannot be taken seriously, but Kia still needs a model name for the K9 in overseas markets.

The South Korean automaker posted on its Facebook page that it is interested to hear some naming suggestions for the K9 sedan, which was launched in its home market on Wednesday (read more about that here).

Kia has not yet revealed which export markets are destined to get the luxury car, but it's a no-brainer that a vehicle of the size and price of the K9 will be offered in North America.

The only question is when and under what name will the K9 make it to U.S. showrooms. For the first part of the question, our guess would be next year or perhaps in 2014.

As for the name, after you watch the new video we found from today's presentation, head over to the comments section to tell us your thoughts.

How about Kia Borrego for sheepishly borrowing styling cues?  Kia was doing so well with Optima, Rio, and Soul.  This is a step back, and really doesn't fit the current family lineup.

I could care less if they "copy" other car stylings.  It looks pretty sexy to me.  Copying is what the world is about. Fashion, automotive, food... it's all being knocked off.. some better, and some worse than others.

Whatever it's called, I hope the U.S. version arrives sans the quad-lensed headlights.  They're too weird looking.  Oh, and the styling details of the car are not very well done (the dual opening side vents, the vertical grille bars, etc., etc.  The basic shape of the car is okay, if derivitive and not all that original, but I hope the designers will 'Americanize' the one destined for our shores.

People are just being silly, not to mention design challenged.

The K9 doesn't have a greenhouse with the BMW signature Hofmeister kink, unlike both the Lexus GS and LS and I'd like to know what BMW has headlights like the K9.

People are just being fooled by the grill due to it having vertical slats (the new Kia cee'd has a similar shaped grill and doesn't "look" like BMW b/c it doesn't have vertical slats).

And if anything, the front/grill of the K9 looks more like the Maserati Quattroporte than any BMW (look up the Quattroporte with the vertical slatted grill) which Peter Schreyer noted as being an influence.

In the USA, do not name it the K9, this is the moniker for a dog. A K9 is a four legged furry animal in America. No more alpha numeric crap either. Call it the Monaco, Serene, Catalina, South Beach, anything but K9

Blarg! said... »May 07, 2012

Names don't sell anymore.

Alphanumeric nomenclature do.

Gary Bendrey said... »May 08, 2012

Oh, only numbers sell. Like G8, G5, G6 GT--all Pontiac. Or F500 Ford instead of Taurus. How about the good names selling, Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, Rolls Royce Phantom, Bentley Continental.
Mercedes Benz ( The brand name sells, S, SL, CLK etc denote class or type of car, and the numbers mean something-like-engine size.

By the way - i'm impressed! It is really a beautiful car - sure it reminds me of a 7Series, but hey, you'd better "steal it in a good way, than create it in a bad way!" (Yeah, that's a Dutch saying which i couldn't translate=D)

ben said... »May 12, 2012

It really doesn't! Im a kia fan, and I especially loved the way they changed their whole design team around, but this k9 looks like its trying to hard to be luxurious and not be kia-ish. It looks very much like a bmw in the front and kia really doesnt need tohave a car that looks like a copy of another brand, when it can come up with great designs, I don't think they did it intentionally, though,  Peter Schreyer is a great designer and doesnt need to copy.
