While Scion has no current plans to offer a turbocharged version of the FR-S sports coupe, the word on the street is that Toyota’s North American subsidiary is preparing a 2+2 convertible or a pure two-seater roadster version of its rear-wheel drive model. Keep in mind, the images you see here are from Cartel’s 2012 FR-S Speedster Concept.

The story comes courtesy of the team over at Car&Driver that claims to have confirmed rumors about the development of a soft-top Scion FR-S. The news follows a recent statement from the Toyota 86’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, who told a German magazine, “The GT 86 was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible.”

Since Toyota is working on open-top 86 / GT 86, it would only make sense that Scion would do the same with its FR-S since the two models are identical. We still don’t know if Subaru will offer a BRZ Cabrio.

The Scion FR-S as well as its Toyota 86 sibling in convertible form would make use of the same 200-horsepower 2.0-liter flat-four with a choice of six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

Their main rival would be, of course, the two-seater Mazda MX-5 and to a much lesser extent, the Mustang V6 Convertible in the States.

The magazine says that we should expect the Scion FR-S Cabrio to arrive in the market towards the end of next year or early 2014, priced a couple thousand dollars more than the coupe model that starts at $24,200.
