A reader of Swedish car magazine, Teknikens Värld, nabbed these spy photos of a beefed up S60 while undergoing tests in Scandinavia.

Despite the fact that the car is registered as a T6 AWD with 304 horsepower, the team over at Teknikens Värld claims to have information that there is more than meets the eye to this prototype claiming that it is likely an R model being prepared in cooperation with Volvo’s racing partner, Polestar.

The person who took the pictures says that the car’s engine sounded more like a rumbling V8, though it could have been a modified version of Volvo’s straight-six turbo.

We will take it with a grain of salt, but the magazine says that either way, the S60 R would put around 400-horsepower on the tarmac through its all-wheel drive system.

The spy pictures suggest that this S60 sits lower than the regular models while featuring wider front and rear fenders to fit the bigger wheels.

If all this info turns out to be true, we will no doubt be seeing more of Volvo’s alleged BMW M3 and Audi RS4 rival, in which case, we will keep you updated.

Thanks to David H. for the tip!
