Londoner Steals Fuel from Car in all Sorts of Ways in Broad Daylight, No One Gives a Damn

|

If there is one in thing that prevails among residents of large cities around the world, it is the "mind your own business" mentality.

Occasionally, this may be a good thing, especially when it comes to one's privacy, but there are times you wish that people would be more concerned and active with what's going on around them…

After Rory Reid became a victim of car fuel theft in the middle of London, he decided to conduct a social experiment to see if any citizen would take notice of someone removing fuel from a car in broad daylight.

Using his own vehicle, a VW Polo hatchback, Reid parked the car on various central streets of London. He then siphoned the tank using numerous tools including an earsplitting 850-watt hammer drill, but the result was the same: no one blinked an eyelid…

Having lived in London for 14 years, I've seen my fair share of lows. This doesn't shock me at all. The worst thing about this is that it shows how people are becoming more and more indifferent to these sort of things, and that is not just in the UK. Just sad.

Well, let's be honest. Who here would actually lecture the tall guy armed with a 30 inch drill? For somebody else's fuel?

As a black man, I must say that some people wouldn't attempt
to stop you in fear that they are using a stereotype of "black men
steal". The same way some older Caucasian women actually hold onto their
purses or belongings as I jog quickly by them on a sidewalk in the evening. It
would be interesting to see if the same would be true with a caucasian male…

Most people ignored him because they thought the car belonged to him.  I think the outcome would've been different if.... (1) He had a much larger tanks capable of holding 10+gallons of fuel. and (2) He was going from car to car in the same location.
