Not too long after Jaguar confirmed the development of a range-topping version of its upcoming F-Type roadster, and our scoop photographers nabbed a prototype of the V8-powered model that will wear the British brand’s ‘R’ logo.

So how do we know for sure that this is the F-Type R and not the base F-Type? Well, Jaguar actually made it pretty easy for us to be able to distinguish the two models.

You see, the entry-level version that will be motivated by Jaguar’s new 3.0-liter supercharged V6 delivering 375hp (380PS) and 460Nm (339 lb-ft) of peak torque has two centrally mounted tail pipes, whereas the V8 model pictured here sports a pair of exhausts on either side of the rear diffuser. Simple as that.

While Jaguar told us that the F-type R will be powered by the same 5.0-litre lump you’ll find in an XFR, XJ and XKR, the British automaker did not give out any performance numbers.

For the record, Jaguar currently offers two versions of the 5.0-liter supercharged V8, the first of which has an output of 510-horsepower and peak torque of 461 lb-ft (624Nm), while the other produces 550-horses and 505 lb-ft (745Nm) in the XKR-S.

Both the V6 and V8 versions of the F-Type roadster will arrive in the second quarter of 2013 followed by a coupe model about a year later.
