Can a roadster powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated (n/a) engine from the past like the (Euro-spec) Honda S2000, which traces its roots back to 1999, compete with a modern day sports car featuring a similar type of engine (albeit a flat-four) like the Subaru BRZ that was only just launched onto the market this year?
Some of you may already suspect the outcome in this "drag race" from French magazine Motor Sport, but why spoil the fun for the rest?

S2000 FTW!
i luv S2ks, they look so harmless but they rev to nearly 9000 and goes like stink
reality bites
I would still take a good used S2k today. It's a shame what Honda has become. Used to have such a fun lineup. I miss the last model Preludes too.
God bless the S2000 - one of Honda's greatest.
not just Honda Greatest, world's greatest!!
S2000 has 40 more horse power and 20 more lb-ft, and only weighs 90 more pounds. Its not that surprising.
So!
Then early S-2000 was great fun for somebody who could use the chassis and power at elevated levels, but it was a bitch in normal use with its serious lack of torque. And that instrument cluster ..what a mess. Now don't get me wrong, I like the S-2000, but a lot of you who have never spent time in an S-2000 need a reality check.
Neither of these cars were built for drag racing, how about we see them in a road race, how do they compare in the handling department? That's what anyone in the market for a BRZ or GT86 would like to see.
A lap on the track would have been better to show BRZ handling.
Do women who will purchase these wannabee cars really care?
you mean wunderbar, ah another German who could not spell correctly. shame!
Really Hugh... disappointing comment from someone I expect better of.
These are enthusiast cars, whether your male or female
Actually, I own one and I find your comment coming from a huge ignorant... Lack of torque, only useful at elevated levels? What are you talking about?... The car has one of the best power to weight relationship even in today's standards, the fact that it is NA means no Turbo Lag at all... And probably its best attribute (aside of the fact that it is a very high revving engine, which will avoid and upshit (and loss of lap seconds) in several tracks, is it's weight distribution and engine placement... The S2K is one of best "handling" cars out there still today and for those asking for a competition in the track between both cars... If you make sure they are using the same "rubber" (same tires), the probability of the Honda not only winning, but spanking the BRZ's ass are as huge as your level of ignorance
Sentences begin with capitals. Yes I put an extra e in wannabe, so what. I'm not German. Also, fuck you.
Correction, do buyers of these wannabe cars really care? To me this car is one step above the standard auto that is offered with cosmetic options and called the "sport version". These cars are only exciting when compared with the other Toyota and Subaru cars in their regular line. Compare the BRZ to the WRX......not exiting.
says honda double wishbone rear wheel drive against subaru macpherson. i think not
I own an S2000, and I love it. However, this is really unfair to race these cars in a straight line. The hp advantage, and the fact that brand new the S2000 cost 8-9k more, it's really unfair to expose the BRZ this way. Could Honda have made an S2000 for $25k, and have it beat the BRZ? I think not.
i had a 98 prelude sh and i loved that car. However i think the BRZ has everything i wanted ( rear wheel drive 6 speed manual etc) that my prelude didn't. I do know that my prelude had more BHP after some minor mods than the brz. After building a brz similar to the gaylude i owned i think it would be overall superior
