Alfa Romeo is trying to boost sales of its MiTo supermini and Giulietta compact hatchbacks in Britain by extending its current three-year warranty by a further two years, but as you would expect, there are a few catches.

First and foremost, the five-year warranty is a temporary promotional move that will be available to customers who buy a new car from now until 30 September 2012 – then it’s back again to the three-year warranty for anyone purchasing one of the two models.

According to the Italian brand, the new extended warranty will comprise 36 months’ of unlimited mileage warranty plus 24 months of mechanical warranty only on MiTo and Giulietta purchases.

Here’s some fine print from Alfa Romeo on what is not included in the 24 months extended warranty:

“The extended warranty offer is only available to retail customers between 1 July and 30 September. It excludes component failure resulting from wear and tear and does not protect against damage or failures to drive and timing belts, injectors, glow and spark plugs, brake components, filters, piping, windscreen and wiper blades, shock absorbers, tyres, electrical components, clutch, accessories, or any equipment not originally fitted by Fiat Group Automobiles.”
