Audi R9: A Design Study for a High-Performance Sports Saloon

|

Over the years, Audi has shown that it is not afraid to venture into new categories as evidenced by cars like the Ur-Quattro, the V8 / A8, and more recently, the R8 and the A5 and A7 Sportback.

The reason why we mentioned these models is that a Russian design student of the Moscow State Technical University "MAMI" (MSTU "MAMI") came up with the idea of combining elements from all cars to create a flagships sports saloon for his final thesis project.

The design study is named the R9 and it was imagined to be something in the likes of Audi's version of the Lamborghini Estoque.

The car's styling encompasses many ideas, from the front end of the 2010 Quattro Concept, itself inspired by the original Ur-Quattro coupe, to the coupe-ish roofline of the A5 and A7 Sportback models.

The R9 was designed to be fitted with a front-mounted engine and, of course, Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system.

Take a peek at the rest of the photos after the break, and then head over to the comments to voice your thoughts on the design.

I do not like the styling. For instance, the nose job ( facia ), how can this thing be aerodynamic, what ever happened to streamlining and a low cd

They might start looking like this a few generations from now.

The paper design did not translate well in the real word application.

Awesome concept—for 1972. It just needs to be gold, with Raquel Welch lounging on the hood.

everyone, do not worry about the styling, this concept and like every other concept will never become a reality. thank you and have a good day.

So that what's Audi design department was doing when they should have given their normal cars a new design.
This is different for once.
And that's why I like it.

That greenhouse looks like something that Lincoln was working on recently.  I don't particularly like it but it is just a concept at this point.

Perfect! I want this!

There simply isn't a single redeeming quality about this design.

That's some built in liscence plate frame on the front of that thing...

That thing is ugly. It looks like a miitary style shed with some wheels bolted onto it and a dash of ugly added on top.

very smart design...
It hides its big volume in a clever way, nice sporty lines - especially near wheels...
Its strongest view is the front
