As far as extreme engine swaps and BMW E30s go, the V12-powered 350i we discovered back in 2007 no doubt takes the cake.
However, this 1989 3-Series sedan found for sale in Holland comes pretty close as the owner shoehorned a 4.4-liter V8 engine (M62B44) from a 1996-1998 540i E39 under its bonnet.
The eight-cylinder unit delivers 282-horsepower (286PS) to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox sourced from a V8-powered 535i E39.
In true Frankenstein style, the mix-and-match continues with front brakes from an E36 M3, rear brakes from an E36 325i, a radiator from the 324td, E36 leather seats, and a rear differential from an unidentified model.
If you live in The Netherlands, all this could be yours for €7,200 (US$8,900).

The problem with this kind of cars is that they look great on paper, the pics are awesome, but in reality they suck. Nothing fits, they rattle and squeak, engine is leaking, paint is scratched and chipped, you get all kind of strange lights in the dashboard, etc.
Not if you doit right... they dont...
If you ask 7k euro for it, it's not done right.
There are a quite number of twelve transplants into 3-Series cars, around the world. And M5 V-8 transplants into 3-Series cars are almost common. Just Google or go to You Tube for more examples
My M5 transplant into a 96' 328is coupe, completed this year, uses a 2002 V-8 drivetrain. The installation looks factory. Still looking at adding the M5's brakes
The hardest part after the rear end/dif, was the installation of the Borla M5 exhaust. The exhaust sound makes me grin every time I start it, never did like the sound of my inline six Mercs or BMW's. .
Several light launch runs to 60MPH have produced low to mid 4 second times. Handling wasn't effected.
The hot bed of this activity seems to be Eastern Europe, where Hot Rodding seems to be alive and flourishing.
That depends on the builders, build ethics.
I started with a near perfect car, did the job with one goal, mind, make it look an operate as if factory, including all the interfaces and emission systems. The only thing that gives my car away, with the hood/bonnet closed, is the exhaust sound.
Looks done well, but no good pictures of the dash or trunk so hard to tell.
komt het ook door de APK met die motor ?
I love it...if I lived in Holland I would love to have a sleeper like that
