The most potent version of Hyundai’s new Veloster 1+2 door coupe that comes equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol engine will go on sale in Britain on September 24 priced at £21,995.

In European specification, the Veloster Turbo SE’s inline-four delivers an output of 183bhp (186) and a peak torque of 195 lb-ft (265Nm). It is linked to a standard six-speed manual gearbox and allows for a 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 133 mph (214km/h).

Hyundai quotes a combined fuel economy of 40.9mpg UK with CO2 emissions of 157g/km.

Compared to the regular Veloster, the Turbo also features a revised suspension with firmer dampers, a new body kit and larger 18-inch wheels shod in beefier tires.

Interior upgrades include sport leather seats and additional standard equipment such as the 7-inch touchscreen satellite navigation system that incorporates a media centre and reverse parking camera with parking guidance.

Hyundai says the new Veloster Turbo will compete against performance iterations of the VW Scirocco and Vauxhall Astra GTC.

“The Veloster has quickly established itself as a fun car and a unique proposition,” said Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK.

“Now the the Veloster Turbo SE brings an extra helping of dynamism, excitement and emotional appeal to our refreshed model line-up. Its overall package is genuinely strong against other competitors such as the VW Scirocco 1.4TSI and the Astra GTC 1.6i 16v VVT Turbo.”
