While this isn’t the first time we have spotted Peugeot testing a replacement for the 308 compact hatchback, the previous prototypes were test mules, meaning the French company’s engineers used a modified version of the current model’s body to cover the new platform.

Now, our spies snapped some pictures of a development prototype wearing the body of the actual production model that’s slated to go on sale late next year.

While rumors stemming from Britain had suggested that Peugeot would name the five-door hatchback 301, the French company recently came out with an announcement saying that from now on, all vehicles will end in either a “1” or an “8”.

The end digit “1” will be used on affordable models such as the budget 301 compact sedan, while the “8” will find its way on the regular models including the 308 hatchback’s replacement seen in these pictures.

The styling of the new 308 will borrow elements from the new 208 as well as recent concept cars like the HX1 and the HR1. Aside from a more elegant front grille, the five-door version of the next 308 will get a third side window and sculptured profile lines.

As was the case with the 208, the compact hatch will be lighter than the model it replaces.

The platform as well as the engine range will be shared with the Citroën C4 and DS4 models. Aside from the usual turbocharged petrol and diesel units, the next 308 will also be offered with PSA’s HYbrid4 diesel-electric hybrid powerplant.
