A new BMW M3 is coming. But you already know that. Perhaps then, we can pique your interest with a short film of an F80 M3 prototype filling the Caracciola Karussell at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the racy sounds of its new turbocharged inline-six engine, courtesy of YouTube user 'Nurburgdale'.
Replacing the 414hp unforced induction V8 engine of the current model, the heavy-breathing straight-six is pegged to deliver somewhere around 450-ponies.
It will likely be connected to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (despite some rumors about BMW getting rid of the stick shift version) that drive the rear wheels.
Being based on the F80 platform, the M3 will be slightly bigger than the current model, but the use of lighter materials will actually bring the weight down.
A beefed up body along with a re-trimmed interior and a specially tuned chassis will complete the upgrades over the regular 3-Series sedan.

That definitely sounds like an inline 6. I hope it can post better numbers than the current M3 because the RS5 and C63 are pulling away from it in straight line acceleration numbers. Check out my blog which has some more info www.ignitionspeed.com
It's definitely a six-cylinder m3
I saw it last month @ Las Vegas Strip along with a 5 Series M. They seem to be doing some hot weather testings. It happend for two straight days and for various occasions.
Aww I am kinda annoyed of how it sounds now. Still going to be a great car but now no great engine noise we currently get from the V8.
Guess people are going to modify the exhaust for this car more then the current M3's.
We've all heard it already as we have food blenders.
Doesn't have the stratospheric rev range that the V8 did. However, it also doesn't have the outrageously bad fuel economy either. In today's world you need to be realistic. A six plus turbos is a decent compromise.
Close your eyes and it could be almost any car. Does not distinguish itself enough to be an aural treat.
I quite like it. Nice stance too!
