The last time our scoop photographers caught up with Infiniti engineers, they were driving a test mule of the next generation G sedan outfitted with the body of the current model.

Those days are gone as Infiniti is now trying out prototypes of the new G series with its production body, albeit camouflaged under a network of plastic wraps.

Nevertheless, we can make out several details such as the crescent-cut C-pillar that we’ve already seen on several concept as well as production models from Infiniti like the JX crossover, and the “angrier” face with the marque’s new signature grille and stretched headlamps.

We’ll have to wait for another encounter to get a glimpse of the interior, but we expect Infiniti to offer the new G with a redesigned dashboard and new tech goodies.

The latest word on the street is that Infiniti will offer the new G sedan with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged diesel and petrol engines sourced from Mercedes-Benz, as part of the extensive partnership between parent companies Renault-Nissan and Daimler, straight from launch. A V6 gasoline option will complete the range.

We still don’t know, though, if the diesel units will be on offer in North America.

Infiniti officials have said that the G sedan will make its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in 2013 and go on sale worldwide in spring of the same year.

The Coupe and Convertible models of the series will be next up on Infiniti’s menu for the G series.
