The new Mitsubishi Outlander’s world tour continues with its North American premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Designed from the ground up to be offered with an advanced hybrid powerplant, the seven-seater 2014 Outlander also underwent an intensive diet losing around 200 pounds (91 kg) compared to the outgoing model.

The styling is new both inside and out with Mitsubishi adding new standard and optional features ranging from a next-generation navigation and a power tailgate, to several safety systems such as a camera-based Lane Departure Warning system and radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control.

The entry-level model will arrive in dealerships next year with a re-engineered version of Mitsubishi’s 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with a continuously-variable transmission (CVT) and optionally, Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system.

The premium GT trim grade will be offered with a more powerful 24-valve 3.0-liter V6 unit linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

In the beginning of 2014, Mitsubishi will enhance the range with the Plug-in Outlander PHEV that makes use of front-and rear-mounted electric motors as well as a 2.0-liter gasoline engine along with a new form of Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. The hybrid model can operate in purely EV, Parallel and Series Hybrid modes.
