Sad but true; the only exterior feature we found worthy of a note on the new 2014 Acura RLX that made its world premiere at this week's Los Angeles Auto Show and which will be sold in Japan as the new Honda Legend, are its so-called "Jewel-Eye" LED headlamps.
The rest of the car in terms of styling might as well be a puffed up $50k Honda Accord or if you prefer, a longer and duller looking version of the Acura ILX, which itself, is a glorified Honda Civic under the sheetmetal.
So what's special about with these multi-faced LEDs? Well, there's lots of them and to be more specific, there are 5 light sources positioned behind each headlamp and each one feeds twin bulbs, which brings the total to 20 beams of light.
According to Acura, which even made a video dedicated to the LEDs, the new RLX's headlamps afford "a modern and distinctive appearance while providing outstanding light distribution and improved down-the-road illumination".
Feel free to enlighten yourself about the "Jewel Eye" LED headlights in the video that follows.

In my dreams..... the RLX is the best handling sedan EVER made. How can it NOT be? But then - that's what I thought of the current RL with it's SH-AWD. But I have yet to read ANY article on ANY car that says, "It's almost as good as Acura's SH-AWD!" . But still..... it's good to dream. I guess. If it turns out that the new RL[X] really is the best handling sedan - what it looks like won't matter much.
What an uninspired comment by your writer...The new RLX represents the next logical step in providing a rational well executed sedan what will be able to send people in great comfort from one destination to another with GREAT FUEL ECONOMY, and with ENHANCED SAFETY. It seems as though many of the writers that you have on staff are filled with an overabundance of an obsessive need to have cars that have profound engines with profound tires, that get 4 mpg. and can go Zero to sixty in three seconds, in order to make up for a profound lack of testosterone they might have, or an underabundance perceived masculine identity. Acura deserves high credit for its new sedan, ESPECIALLY considering that it will be offered as an advanced hybrid with AWD.
The led headlights are the only good looking thing on this car everything else on it is just scrap and whats up with honda/acura and all those damn buttons.
In this category Craig, looks are everything.
I am not impulsive. but now i am Explosive! this car makes me WANT!
Well all the Jewel eye stuff is good and dory but the real jewel lies under the hood, the build, the performance. Acuras are Hondas magnified by several magnitudes. Like Gold magnified.
Boo I'm disappointed. I thought it was 20 individual LEDs...
Well then it goes too that Audis are glorified VWs. Sorry, all the trash talking is just that, these are very honest real world cars built very well and will give their owners many many miles of pleasure.
Joseph, you are making a confusion here... Business and emotion are different things. Nobody will turn their head when they see something like an Acura on the road, but certainly they'll turn their head when they see a Ferrari or a Zonda.
Same thing happens with Golf VII for example - decent and fair car, does exactly what a car is supposed to do, and it does it really well, but in the end it's a boring box on wheels that people will use it just as they do with white appliances.
"uninspired" hmmm words of a pompous blow hard. How can you use words such as uninspired to down a "opinion" by the writer while at the same time supporting an "uninspired" car. Cars like the Panamera hybrid, optima hybrid, infiniti m hybrid, and several others prove that fuel economy and performance can go hand in hand. The tesla model s is all electric and outguns supercars, your comment is merely a misguided, uninformed, irrelevant outlook from what appears to be someone stuck 10 years back. Even the Corvette gets 25 to 26 mpg with a 7.0l V8. The bottom line is that this RLX looks like a big accord, its body crease came from the ILX which is acuras cheapest car based on hondas economy sedan. It is a poor representation of what Honda can do, and it is all together an underwhelming package as a whole. SH AWD did little more than add weight to the slow, ugly, and overpriced RL and to top it off its gas mileage was worse than some V8s. This new RLX promises better economy but it took an over complicated hybrid system to do it? Thats a joke, Honda techonolgy in general is behind the curve, fancy headlights, and an interior that looks more like a trim level on an accord than a luxury sedan its no wonder the writer is knocking this car. Do yourself a favor get a little more educated on ":modern" automotive trends and than come back and leave your "uninspired" comments in the past where their "inspiration" came from.
I'm sorry but when I confuse this with an Accord which is half the cost and also dull then there's a problem. Please stop trying to advertise too. Acura lost its way and is not doing anything to get it back.
Back when it was called the Acura Legend, it truly lived up to it's name. Sad to see what it's become.
I doubt this will sell well. It's dowdy and very behind the times. The LED headlamps are a goofy looking execution of what other luxury carmakers have been offering for a couple years now. At least Acura could have made them look good.
