MINI has turned the switch on its next hatchback’s production headlamps and taillights, which can be seen for the first time in this prototype that was nabbed testing in Germany by our scoop photographers.

Up until now, the front and rear combination lights used on the 2014 Mini hatch test cars were borrowed from the BMW Group’s parts bin. The styling theme for the lamps on both ends is rings, rings and…more rings.

The rest of the car remains heavily camouflaged, but we suspect that it won’t be long before the brand’s engineers start peeling off the swirly covers from the prototype models.

The next generation of Mini’s hatchback, codenamed F56, will be based on a new BMW-engineered platform called UKL1, available in two wheelbase lengths. Among other model to utilize the UKL1, will be the first front-wheel drive BMW, the 1-Series Gran Turismo.

In a different first, the third generation of the Mini hatchback since the brand was acquired by the German automaker will add a five-door body style to the range, spy pictures of which, you can see here.
