The Toyota Group’s pint size Scion iQ is the subject of a voluntary recall in the United States after the company discovered that the front passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) weight sensor cables are prone to damage.

The company said that this sensor, which is used to control the operation of the front passenger Supplemental Restraint Systems, including the airbags and seat belt pre-tensioner, is located in the seat track and can come into contact with objects placed close by whenever the front passenger seat slides forward or backward.

If the sensor was to be damaged in any way, then the airbags may not deploy as designed or the airbags and seat belt pre-tensioner may be activated when not necessary. Toyota noted that is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition.

To rectify the threat, the Japanese carmaker’s dealers will install a protective cover over the sensor cables.

Overall, the recall involves approximately 11,200 Scion iQ vehicles from the 2012 and 2013 model years.
