European Car of the Year Short List with the 8 Finalists Revealed, Think You Can Pick the Winner?

After announcing the 34 nominees (38 if you include re-badged models like the Seat Toledo and Subaru BRZ) in late September, the organizing committee of the European edition of the Car of the Year award has now released the short list with the 8 finalists.

Normally, the short list includes 7 models, but due to the fact that two cars tied in the same position during the voting process, the committee increased the number of finalists to eight, just as it did in the 2007 edition of the award.

The nominees voted in for the final phase of the 2013 Car of the Year award, the winner of which will be announced on March 4, 2013, are the following vehicle models:

2013 COTY Short List

Ford B-Max
Hyundai i30
Mercedes Benz A-class
Peugeot 208
Renault Clio
Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT86
Volkswagen Golf
Volvo V40.

So there you have it. If you think you can pick the winner, go ahead and tell us in the comments area after the visual break.

Golf will win without doubt. Simply because it's the best car of the lot as well as a display of what clever technology can do in terms of fuel efficiency.

so you've driven all these cars and have been able to form an educated opinion...?

I will imagine the Mercedes A class. its seems to have broken the stereotype of Mercedes and is certainly an interesting addition to the high end small automobile offerings.

A-Class will certainly take this one; affordable luxury that also manages to looks great.

it is obvious that clio will get this logo next to its name. because it has started a new age in its segment

Knowing how my fellow stupid Europeans think and taking into account A Klasse's price, I think i30 will be the one.
I hope I'm wrong though.

mike said... »December 17, 2012

trust me..the i30 will win this one hands down...and it deserves to too...it is already car of the year on www.carbuyer.co.uk and has won many awards around the globe already...if ur not a badge snob then you would agree....btw..I own an i30 too and its the best car I've had so far and Ive had quite a few cars in many classes over the years

mike said... »December 17, 2012

the golf has been practically the same car every time they make a new one..its like the porsche...just little bits add just to excite people and nothing revolutionary..the i30 will win and I think the boss of VW would agree too http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2011/09/vw-boss-caught-on-film-impressed-by.html

I'm not a badge snob and I'm truly impressed with Kia/Hyundai progress in the past years (including that insane 7/10 year warranty), but the new i30 isn't as "striking" and it won't make such big impact as the first generation did at the time of its launch.

benz A class is ticking all boxes.
but i30 is also a success.

im sorry they cannot let the golf win,
i like the golf but it looks exactly the same as the two models before, and the same goes to the interior...
i cant really decide between the 208 and the 86gt, the 208 has superb interior the 86 has superb handling, so im happy one of them wins

Wax_Lyrical said... »December 18, 2012

it's Volvo V40 vs Peugeot 208 ...

EDANTES said... »December 18, 2012

Hmmm.... the car that wins will not be the best car. The French and Italians always vote for their own [although the Germans and Brits are honest] and since there are no Italians represented here, it'll probably be French then...

Technology needs to be a greater issue. Too many people are suffering phone related accidents. It can be argued this is the driver's own fault, but this does not help families and other people injured by drivers who respond to phones illegally while driving, or the drivers who suffer accidents themselves using phones while driving. There is no way the law can keep up with the number of people illegally using phones while driving. Drivers need to be able to connect more safely and more easily when driving through car technology. Cars need to be considered a mobile device and the behavior of tech-connected people needs to be included as a significant safety issue. So, it is not just about brakes and sensors detecting the car in front- safety is about managing phones and technology,as well, because if the car technology does not enable easy and safe connection, many drivers will connect unsafely, so manufactures providing this technology needs far more recognition.

You're right, the Golf will win. Fucking VW's always win these things no matter what other cars are in the list. It's so predictable it's sad. They really should give it to someone else.

Merc A will win, but it should be the Golf (due to the new MQB platform, which includes A3, etc).
