Two weeks ago, we brought you spy pictures of the newest and smallest member of Mercedes-Benz’s growing family of SUV and crossover models, tipped to be called the GLA.

Now, French car magazine L’Automobile brings us more details of the GLA in the shape of new spy footage nabbing a prototype wearing varying levels of disguise while testing in Spain.

As evidenced from the scoop pictures and the video, the GLA leans clearly towards the crossover segment with a slightly bigger and more muscular body than the A-Class hatchback upon which it is based.

You won’t be surprised to learn that the GLA will offer much the same engine options as the A-Class with turbocharged petrol and diesel powerplants coupled to a standard six-speed manual and an optional seven-speed dual clutch unit, while Merc’s new 4MATIC all-wheel drive system will be available on the more powerful models.

Word has it that the new GLA will go on sale in early 2014, but we still don’t know if it will be offered in the States.
