If you’re a Carscoop regular, or if your memory is strong enough, you may recall the Singer 911 we featured back in 2011. It’s a custom-made 911 built by Los Angeles-based Singer Vehicle Design that wanted to create the ultimate air-cooled Porsche.

In spite of starting with the classic 911 chassis, which was manufactured until 1989, Singer decided to switch to the more modern 964 that replaced it – and that meant a whole lot of development.

What Singer does is strip away everything, get down to the bare metal, then rust-proof and put the sound-deadening material and start building a brand-new car.

Everything on the car is new, from its Cosworth-built 3.8-liter flat-six engine that puts out 350HP to the Recaro seats, dials, HVAC unit, 17-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, Turbo-sourced brakes with ABS and Ohlins dampers; oh, and of course, the carbon fiber bodywork panels.

All this, of course, comes at a cost. Actually, a very high price, as the Singer 911 starts from US$300,000 and, since every car can be built to the customer’s specification, can cost as much as half a million! Yes, it is exorbitantly priced and you could buy a fleet of air-cooled Porsche 993s and 964s for that kind of money but this 911 is a completely different kind of animal.

Chris Harris not only had the opportunity to drive it, but was also treated to a very enlightening view on the inside workings of the company and their development and building of this unique 911, which you can watch in the video that follows.
