Jay Leno has GM Chief Designer Give him a Tour of the 2014 Corvette Stingray, Teases Test Drive

|

As these lines are written, we bet most road test editors, especially in the U.S., are green with envy. Why? Because a famous car enthusiast, who also happens to have his own motoring show, just beat them to driving the car everyone’s dying to get their hands on.

No disrespect to colleagues, but when it comes to getting first dibs on the 2014 Corvette Stingray, it surely helps if your name is Jay Leno and you are a very high-profile car nut and Corvette enthusiast who also owns a ZR-1.

You may recall that GM’s chief of design Ed Welburn brought some classic ‘Vettes, including the one-off Stingray racer, to Jay Leno’s Garage shortly before the launch of the new model in Detroit.

Now Welburn has returned with a shiny new Corvette Stingray. The good news is that you can trust Jay to ask all the questions a regular car guy would – and that he does, as you can see in the video that follows after the break.

The bad news is that he teases us by driving the new Corvette out of the showroom with Welburn riding shotgun. He said that he’d only take it around the block but, really, do you believe he could have resisted a short drive? We’ll have to wait a a few more days to find out…

What is the only thing Jay Leno loves more than cars? Dressing head to toe in denim.

I sure like Ed Welburn as he's one the few GM executives that I would keep at GM. Leno does really drive the point home that this Corvette is more European than American in its styling and features. And that's one of the major rubs with the C7 — the Vette is an American icon, not a vehicle that needs to apply for an H1B1 visa.

Corvette has always been unique in a sea of european sports cars. So why does it now bow down and borrow the Ferrari FF front, GT-R side profile and Camaro rear? Inside dash looks like it took the sweeping center console from Audi and the area above the glovebox and vents reminds me of '13 Hyundai Santa fe. Gauge bezel looks like Hyundai veloster, at least the exterior doors still look like corvette. The concept and spy renderings looked better, unique and updated without borrowing anything thats already in production. The auto industry like the film industry has ran out of ideas borrowing or rerunning hits to churn revenue. There will be a lot of black cars ordered to disguise its styling cues.
