NAIAS 2013: VW's New Seven-Seat SUV Concept Slots Between Tiguan and Touareg

|

Volkswagen's star attraction at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit will be a new conceptual study for a seven-seat SUV that will likely lead to a production model within the next couple of years.

The first official rendering of the concept, whose name remains concealed for now, was leaked onto the web by British magazine Autocar, which says the production version "will be based on VW’s MQB platform" and built in the U.S. at the company's factory in Tennessee that also manufactures the Passat.

However, Reuters reported that the SUV will ride on the same platform architecture as the North American Passat.

The seven-seater crossover will be positioned between the Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, both of which offer seating for five.

When I first looked at the image without reading the title, I thought it was a facelifted Audi Q7, since there is some resemblance to it.

VW is supposed to be building a 7-seater Truck-based SUV built on the Amarok Pickup.

The American seems to be make a premium out of a vehicle based on size, and full size expeditions XL will fetch double the price of a Ford Escape. VW is taking the Land Rover route it seems, with a sizable people mover slotted between the Touareg and Tiguan, wherein the LR4 is a middle-of-the-pack offering functionality between the LR2 Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover/Range Rover Sport.

This seems to be in the same league as the Explorer, Traverse, Pathfinder, will probably start around 30-33k as a more trendy alternative with conservative but classy styling.

I hope Lincoln takes the same approach. Make the navigator the size and class of the Range Rover, and take it upmarket. Revise the MKT to be a more sporty 7 seater people mover thus getting rid of truck-based SUV's all together, not a bloated wagon. Something on par with the Infiniti JX and Mercedes GL. It would be a smart move on the part of Lincoln, it's definitely a smart move on the part of VW.
