BMW 3-Series GT Images Leaked Ahead of Official Debut [Updated Gallery]

|

It seems that the image of the new BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo we posted yesterday was legit, as it is included in a fresh batch of official pictures that somehow, found their way out of Munich and onto the web.

Following the example of the 5-Series GT, which started this trend for BMW, the 3-Series GT is a five-door liftback version of the brand's compact luxury saloon aimed at buyers who want a more practical variant of the 3-Series and, for some reason, won’t settle with the Touring estate.

Anyways, the 3-Series GT adopts the two-piece tailgate design that debuted in the 5 GT, admittedly managing to make it look less ungainly. According to info from British publication Autocar, the changes made by BMW's designers and engineers are more than skin-deep.

That’s because the GT is around 200 mm longer than the 3-Series Touring on which it is based, with 110 mm of that increase being accounted for by the stretched wheelbase. It’s also around 80 mm taller and 20 mm wider measuring 1,510 and 1,830 mm in height and width respectively and its 520-lt trunk is 20 lt larger than the Touring’s (with the rear seats up).

The bigger dimensions will offer a more spacious cabin. According to insider info, the rear-seat passengers will have as much as 70 mm extra legroom at their disposal, while the driving position has been elevated by 60 mm to increase visibility.

Although we’ll have to wait for the official announcement for the full engine line-up, we anticipate that it will mirror that of the existing 3-Series versions with a wide range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines combined with six-speed manual or 8-speed auto transmissions and rear- or all-wheel drive.

The grill looks like a set of nostrils flaring. Why did they not just put the normal kidney grill design from the current 3 series

This bmw looks like it has been sniffing coke

Ugly and useless. You have the sedan, you have the wagon, you will have the Gran Coupe very soon. What purpose does this serve ? The wagon looks better, the sedan drives better, the gran coupe is sportier.

Does BMW intentionally TRY to make their cars uglier & uglier just to test a threshhold to see if people will still buy them?

Paul said... »February 06, 2013

Honestly, do BMW really need this?

Wait until the FWD range including a van comes, by then this will look like a decent car!

BMW really need to reassess the new pig face which bestows their cars of late.

Can't believe a BMW used to be my dream car, how they have lost their way. Only good thing left is their engines....

Looks better than the Touring I guess. More spacious than the saloon too. This should be seen more like a smaller 5GT than part of another 3-series lineup.

This car is probably designed for Asia markets. It'll follow the good sales the X6 and 5GT has in Asia.

Why? Why did they shrink the 5 series GT?
Why don't they design a new car?
Are the designers lazy? Does BMW still have a design department?
Why do the i3 and the i8 look completely original and are the normal BMW's all look-a-likes?
Does BMW really think we just want one design in different formats?
Why?

I wouldn't be surprised if this had higher takeup rate than the last 3 wagon, considering the takeup rate for 5GT is higher than the wagon when it was available.

In fairness, they havent covered one body style. When do we get a 3 series pickup (ute)? Would sell like hot cakes!

It might sacrifice some of the nice Beamer lines, but a midsize practical sedan hatchback with serious cargo capability is certainly a compromise I and many other drivers would be willing to make. The driving enjoyment of the BMW with significantly greater versatility is sure to pull in new buyers, who would likely otherwise go for a Honda or some other such crossover vehicle.

i dont see the point in the gt range in bmw, im not even sure how people walk into the showroom and say "yes, i want a car that has no idea what it wants to be, uglier and slightly more expensive than a normal bmw"

Leak the photos back into where ever they came from, stat!

Catalin said... »February 07, 2013

Maybe in a parallel universe. In the real-world, the 5-series GT sales were utterly disappointing and the 3-series GT has seen the light of day only because the R&D was too advanced when they realized that people hate ugly cars.
