While browsing Mercedes-Benz's US consumer website to see what you can buy with the equivalent of $59,611, which is the price for the German market CLA 250 Edition 1, we were caught by surprise as the automaker has listed the base MSRP for the CLA 250 that starts at $29,900 – evidently, excluding destination and handling.
That's close to $6,000 less than the entry level C250 sedan, which is powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol rater for 201hp and 229 lb-ft of peak torque.
Under the hood of the CLA, you will find a slightly more potent 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four delivering 208hp (211PS) and 258 lb-ft of torque, with the base model equipped with a standard 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission driving the front or optionally, all four wheels.
With this engine, Mercedes quotes a 6.7-second time for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint and a 240 km/h (150 mph) top speed, which is not bad at all for a $30k sedan.
While it may cost substantially less and have more power than the base C-Class, at 182.3 inches (4,630mm) long, 80.0 inches wide (2,032mm / with mirrors) and 56.6 inches (1,438mm) tall, the CLA is in fact 1.5 inches (38mm) longer. However, it rides on a shorter wheelbase of 106.3 inches (2,700mm) compared to the C-Class' 108.7 inches (2,761mm).
A preliminary order guide for the U.S. model that was leaked online this week, revealed pricing for all standalone features and packages, such as the $2,000 Sport Package that adds 18-inch wheels, bigger brakes and an AMG aero kit, the $1,480 Panorama Sunroof, and the $1,200 leather upholstery options.

Caught by surprise? The commercial with the price was leaked the week before the superbowl which was a week ago. So this price has been known for 2 weeks+ now?

Bravo! Great price point. MB will move many CLA units in North America. Ad campaign is nice too.
The CLA will do outlandishly well in the States.
This thing is going to sell like hotcakes and you can get a lot of options and keep it under 38K. This is going to be a huge seller for them. Does anyone know what Mercedes' projections are for the U.S. market for the first full year?

Automakers that don't include destination and handling in their base price are being dishonest.
Another MB for the bourgeoisie-set. They'll be able to swing the lease payments, but forgo the periodic maintenance because that cost doesn't factor into their budget. One summer, my niece worked in the customer service dept. for a large MB dealer in the NYC-metro area and would set up service appointments and the C-class owners always declined because of the cost. Can only imagine what type of customer this Altima/Accord/Camry MB will bring in now.
I'll take the 2 dr. Accord Coupe anyday over any MB.
That CLA is certainly a beautiful looking auto but unfortunately MBs cost of ownership is crazy after the warranty is over.
