Oh, (Big) Brother: Citroen C1 the First Car to be Fitted with Standard Insurance ‘Black Box’

|

See the young lady leaning towards the new Citroen C1 Connexion Edition in the pictures? That big smile on her face isn't because the uncomfortable photo session is coming to an end, but because she just learned that Citroen is the first manufacturer in the UK to offer a ‘black box’ solution as standard on a new car.

And what is this "black box"? Well, Citroen doesn't really divulge a lot of details, but just like the devices of the same name used in airplanes, the telematics Black Box in the Citroen will collect and store certain driving data and habits, which will then be utilized by insurance companies to increase, retain or lower your rates.

Citroen UK explained in a press statement:

"The Smartnav system, provided by Trafficmaster, allows Citroën to offer free insurance for the first year of ownership to all eligible drivers from 19 - 75 years of age when the car is funded with Elect 3 or Elect 4 finance. This new initiative from Citroën means younger drivers can now drive off in a new Citroën C1 1.0i 68 manual 3-door Connexion for just £109 per month plus deposit on Elect 3 finance - complete with free insurance."

"The Citroën insurance included in this offer is free for qualifying young drivers subject to two years No Claims Discount (NCD). Thanks to the fitment of the telematics unit, Citroën is also able to offer heavily discounted cover to drivers with zero or just one year’s NCD. For example a 19 year old with no NCD can insure a new C1 Connexion with Citroën Insurance for just £950."

"Importantly, renewal premiums will be based on the driving behaviour over the first 12 months of ownership. This means that, regardless of the age of the named individuals on the policy, good driving habits will be rewarded with lower insurance premiums in subsequent years."

If you cherish your pocket more than your freedom, the new C1 Connexion is available in two specifications, standard and Trafficmaster Smartnav, with OTR prices set at £9,820 and £10,170, respectively.

one year free warrany.... just another trick to lure people in willingly accepting the control over their lives. the save your driving habbits? imaging you drive too fast on a regular basis.... the insurance will probably assume that your driving stile is too risky and they won't pay. or - thanks to the eu rules - they provide this data to the official and you'll have to pay. control is what is wanted and everything will be tried to get you to the point that you start begging for it (because it's for your own good and safety ;))

Where is the 17-18 category?!
Is car is aimed at first time drivers who pass their test at 17, being cheap, cheap to run, and keeping the cc rating down (but if i was going to get my daughter a car, it surely wouldnt be french and/or have a 3* N-cap rating...)
And i know for a fact it is gonna be sky high, and they dont want to mention it! i had to fork out thousands when i first passed my test, and i was driving a diesel polo! not boy-racer by any means...

Wow what a bunch of crazy paranoid, conspiracy theory wack jobs, the black box goes along with their insurance. It doesnt say you have to get THEIR INSURANCE but you could get it for free for a year if you go with it. Not to mention SEVERAL cars now adays have a black box in them dont believe me??? Look into it because its a fact. Not to mention ANY insurance company's rates are based on driving habits, crashes, tickets etc. Wow you some of you people including who ever wrote this article are just like lemmings

That young lady should rethink the aqua stretch pants concept. And Citroen...do you think those red bits really work? Is this what Citroen innovative original thinking has come to?
