McLaren P1: Ron Dennis Promises New Nürburgring and Top Gear Track Lap Records

Making the customary short video before the unveiling of your new supercar can be a drag; in the case of McLaren Automotive, though, prepping up one for the Geneva Motor Show debut of the P1 was a piece of cake.

Just reach into your huge Formula 1 archive, pick out Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, add footage of the MP4-12C road car and, voila! You’re good to go.

After the wraps have been pulled off, though, you’d better have something interesting to say to keep the members of the press, who already know the facts and figures, from ignoring you and just looking at your new piece of machinery.

McLaren chairman Ron Dennis certainly pulled that off and, indeed, rose more than a few eyebrows when he promised that the new P1 will set a new Nürburgring lap record thanks not only to its firepower but also to its 2g+ cornering speed.

New F1 team signing Sergio Perez later joined Dennis on the stand and, having sampled the P1, commented that it was “a great experience” (but then he would say that, wouldn’t he?).

You can watch the official unveiling of the McLaren P1 and also learn how the P1 did at the Top Gear test track right after the break.

for the ones who say that P1 cant do Ron's claim on both tracks, think wiser, MP4-12C with 600 hp, has beaten 80% of Bugatti Veyron SS Records, doing excellent at most tracks and standing third in top gear track with only 600 hp, now, P1, more that 900 hp and stunning aerodynamics, cant beat that time???

I agree with some poeple saying the claim is a bit too far, but there is a problem, Mclaren shouldn't have limited the top speed at 350 km/h!, that makes the car to stand before his rivals and appear much weaker than it is because mostly all +900 hp cars do 400 km/h or more, so that makes a lot of people think its not too fast or its weaker than LaFerrari (see the polls, P1 is always the second to LaFerrari).

Mostly wont notice that the topspeed is pretty well limited. This car was anticipated as 418 km/h by Mclaren officials but they seriously doubted that P1 can do such speed, so they believed for at least 384 km/h Theoretical Top Speed because of 600 kg downforce. The standard veyron does around 350 kg of downforce and with 987 BHP, and its own aerodynamics that is well weaker than P1 did 407 km/h. Now P1 has about twice more downforce, a bit less power but the aerodynamics are way better, and the acceleration claims are faster than the standard veyron in average, maybe faster than the super sport if 0-300 km/h is below 14 seconds. So now can you guess that it may do 400 km/h or more(if it does not harm the car)

And, there is no claim on 1/4 mile time yet
