Since Mercedes-Benz announced AMG versions of the new A-Class and CLA, two all-new models, a hot version of the next generation GLK would have been written off as a certainty, until now. According to a new report from Caradvice, though, the redesigned version of the GLK, which will share its underpinnings with the next C-Class, will not be getting the AMG treatment.

The reasons pushed forth for the decision have to do with the relevance of such a model on the market – officials think it wouldn’t sell. They did add that they are willing to reconsider their decision once the Porsche Macan hits showrooms, but until then, it stands as is.

Furthermore, they pointed out that in the case of Audi, the recent S- and RS- badged crossovers have “diluted” the brand, hinting at the fact that they fear the same thing.

However, they may be speaking from experience, since they themselves have done it (and are still doing it) since the year 2000, when the launched the ML55 AMG.

Very high development costs were also cited as forming part of the basis for the decision, as it would set them back a huge amount to make the next GLK a “real AMG”.
