FoMoCo’s “One Ford” philosophy doesn’t just apply to their regular lineup of models, but also encompasses their sportier offerings, as well. After turning the Focus and Fiesta ST into global cars, it’s time for a much more recognizable model from the Ford stable to go global – we said stable, didn’t we?

However, there’s a twist; while Europe is getting the all-new Mustang in three different cylinder choices, its US home market version is only getting two of them, the V6 and V8, according to an Edmunds report citing company sources.

As you may have read in the title, in which we gave away quite a few of this story’s core facts, the third engine option is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit, which is derived from the 2.0-liter engine used to power the Focus ST, and it will be exclusively available for the European market.

With the increase in displacement, the power will grow as well, so the engine is expected to produce around 50hp more than the smaller unit used in the Focus ST, pushing the total power figure to around 300hp. The same engine will be shared with the upcoming Focus RS.

In theory, this should be the best handling of the new Mustangs, because it has the least weight over the front axle. That would translate into a sharper turn-in and more responsive steering, which should make the car less demanding to drive on Europe’s many twisty bits of road.

If Ford would have offered the ‘Stang only with V6 and V8 options in Europe, their chances of success would have been greatly limited, the reason being that many European countries tax cars based on engine displacement and/or according to their CO2 emissions.
