The last thing you want to do on a cold day is to drive around in a convertible model with its top down, but if you’re an automotive tester, practicing things that most regular drivers will never do, is part of the job.

Enter the workday of BMW‘s engineers, who were photographed by our spies running around in a 4-Series Cabriolet prototype with its metallic roof in the wrong position for this time of year in Northern Europe.

The new four-seater replacement to the current 3-Series Convertible will be the second addition to BMW’s newly announced 4-Series range after the coupe, which will be the first to enter production, reportedly in July this year, with the hardtop cabriolet to follow in November, at least according to this leaked document.

We’re not aware of any official plans for an M4 version of the convertible yet, but the regular range will borrow the most potent engines from the new F30 3-Series, including the 240hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline and a 300hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six gasoline units. Due to the added weight of the top, performance and fuel economy figures will be slightly worse than its fixed roof sibling.
