Watch Hennessey's Venom GT Set New World Top Speed Record at 265.7MPH or 427.6 km/h

|

There's no stopping John Hennessey and the company the bears his name from shattering one speed record after the other with their Lotus Elise-based, but evidently, hugely modified, Venom GT.

After being established as the world's fastest production car from zero to 300km/h (186.45 mph) by the Guinness World Records (GWR) with an average time of 13.63 seconds in January this year, the Venom GT now holds the record for the world's fastest production vehicle available for public purchase.

It all went down on February 9, 2013, at the at the United States Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore in Central California, where a Venom GT rolling on Michelin Pilot Super Sport DOT-approved radial tires accelerated to 265.7 mph (427.6 km/h) during testing.

"While a Veyron Super Sport did run 267.8 mph, Bugatti speed-limits its production vehicles to 258 mph," said John Hennessey. "Thus, at 265.7 mph the Venom GT is the fastest production car available to the public."

Priced at a hefty $1.2 million or about €940,000 at the current exchange rates with only 29 cars to be made, Hennessey's Venom GT is propelled by a GM-sourced 7.0-liter (427 cubic inch) LS9 V8 fed by twin turbochargers delivering 1,244 horsepower and 1,155 lb-ft of torque at 19 psi (1.3 bar) of boost pressure. All those crazy horses have only 1,244 kg (2,743 lbs) of mass to move around.

Hop over the break to see how the GT managed to break the speed record.

Good work Hennesey. Koenigsegg needs to hurry up and test it's top speed.

I still would choose the Bugatti Veyron... Same price, maybe just not as fast (altough no customer will ever reach the top speed), but infinitely more refined.

Bugatti sold 5 Veyron Super Sport World Record Editions. These were not electronically limited, and therefore could reach the 267.8 MPH top speed. Until Hennessey can find a longer runway, Bugatti still holds the record.

I want to see two things, the Agera R and Venom GT top speed test, and a track test. Stig?

With the new SSC Tuatara and a G-Wiz!

Really fast, and then what?
The buggati has leather interior and a much more luxury look to be driving on the streets of cannes or ibiza but who on earth would drive an airplane car barely has radio. Not practical for the road but ok if you drag race everyday on track

uummm.... Is this a "production" car or is Hennessey taking a production car, a Lotus Elise, and heavily modifying it?
The fact that this car went 0 to 265.7 mph in TWO miles is VERY impressive. I too would love to see what the top speed of this car. I'm guessing 275 to 280? However, if money were no object, I'd prefer a Veyron. Sorry, but I'm more impressed with a car that can go this fast AND have all the luxury and style that comes with a Veyron. I'm not just picking on the Venom but I look at things the same way with the SSC.

It looks like a homologation special version of an Exige... its a cool looking car but the company could have at least not ...ade it look so identical to the exige I would imagine if you stuff a big enough engine into the exige it would be extremely fast Im surprised its not faster than that given that the exige could get to 60 in what 4.2 seconds with less than 300 hp??? im pretty sure alot of that power simply isnt being put to the ground very well, i would imagine an exige with the say the CLA45 amgs engine maybe tuned to 400hp would probably get a low 3 second 0 to 60 time simply because its so light and the engine doesnt add much weight. It might wouldnt hit the top speed here but it took 1200hp for this almost race prepped car to still not beat the veyron a heavy luxury super car wrapped in leather and gorgeous details ...so seems like a hollow win to me for the venom....
