We’re never happy to report an automotive related death, especially one involving a rare classic car. Well, not exactly classic, but definitely rare, because it’s a Ford GT40 replica that crashed on a country road in southern Germany, while heading to the ADAC Bavaria Historic (vintage car event).
Apparently, conditions were wet and after a sharp bend, the 49 year-old driver lost control and planted the car into the base of a tree – the 43 year-old passenger died in the impact, but the driver survived, albeit with serious injuries.
Even if it was a replica, it was definitely a cool car, especially with the bright orange paintwork it had. Now it appears to be a total wreck, and few parts look salvageable.
This is the danger of driving a high-powered sports car in slippery conditions, especially if said car came in the form of a DIY kit. Unless it’s based on a modern car, most don’t have ABS or traction control – stability control is usually out of the question here.
You really need to be an experienced driver to handle a car like this GT40 replica and always be aware that what you’re driving has no electronic aids whatsoever and if you make a mistake, you end up paying the price fractions of a second later.
