Among the many brands that once made up Italy’s exhaustive list of small, independent carmakers, was the Moretti Motor Company. It was founded in 1925 and lived on for almost six decades ceasing production in the mid-1980s.

One of its coolest looking and most recognized models was the 750 Grand Sport Berlinetta with a body penned by the great Giovanni Michelotti, who was the designer of the BMW 2002, Standard Triumph, Lancia Aprilia Coupè and many other classic cars.

Any attempt to revive a well-known and appreciated automobile can be a difficult and sometimes controversial task, but we think that Brian Males, a Slovakian Automotive and Transport design student at Coventry University, did a respectable job with his Moretti EGS Concept, which pays tribute to the original 750 Grand Sport Berlinetta, while also featuring some unique touches of his own.

Males explains his thoughts on the design:

“In no field more than in the design of automobiles is the Italian genius for sensual pleasure better manifested.”

“In my research I learned that emotional reactions which are processed on visceral level, have a much more impact on choice, rather than cognitions; that the portion of humanity within our cars or as Chris Bangle says, Avatars, has a tremendous impact, and not only in the human-machine interface design but also in the aesthetics.”

“We can’t probably avoid a robotization of the transport, but in terms of aesthetics we can maintain the portion of humanity within our cars.”

“In the era of transition between petrol and electric age we need to look for the factors which could ease this process. A Human factor, probably. Imperfectness? Nostalgia ? Sexuality?”
